Dave was stationed here in Germany during the Cold War, it was a regular occurrence to engage enemy Russian Aircraft and often the Rapier Surface to Air Missile System was actively deployed.
During our recent trip to Germany, Exploring Dave and Andy visited the Museum at RAF Laarbruch. Dave used to be based at this air station in the 1970's and remembers it well.
This is our journey into of our experience of the museum.
Todays Video looks at the history of the RAF Regiment based here at RAF Laarbruch and Dave's memories of the equipment he used including the 40mm Bofor and the Rapier Surface to Air Missile System.
From the Owners;
RAF Museum Laarbruch-Weeze Association
Germany's first and only museum on the history of the Royal Air Force Germany (RAFG), invites you on a trip down memory lane to explore the 45 years history of the RAF Laarbruch and of course, not forgetting the Royal Air Force's presence in Germany.
The museum houses numerous exhibits varying from aircraft that actually served at RAF Laarbruch. Two cockpits, anti-aircraft weapons, ejection seats, dioramas illustrating the different aircraft that served at RAF Laarbruch, also uniforms and other memorabilia. Numerous publications/ documents show the presence of the British Military from 1945 to 1999, especially in the Lower Rhine region, and thus bringing an important chapter of local and post-war history to life and making it tangible.
The visitor can understand how, in more than four decades, occupiers and occupied became friends and allies. Both during the Cold War period and immediately thereafter, the Royal Air Force was a guarantor of security and peace, freedom and friendship.
The museum opened up to the general public in 2007, and is located in three diverse buildings, firstly the main building being the former Anglican church (St. Peter's), this contains the history of Laarbruch, and also includes several cockpits ( Buccaneer, Canberra ). Secondly the former Savings bank which is located next to the main (St Peter's) building, this is dedicated to the RAF regiment. And then finally the ASTRA cinema , this building not only contains a Hawker Hunter T7, but other diverse memorabilia and material. It also shows the history of RAFG, from its beginnings in late 1945, right through until 2001, when Royal Air Force Bruggen, the last front line station, closed down as an active flying station.
The Museum is located on the grounds of the civilian Airport Weeze.

appears to have been abandoned for a long time. Under the surface in Hull this tunnel seems to not be used but is still maintained.
We discovered that Cellulose was the intended contents of the pipework, this made sense as there used to be a chemical plant about a mile away from a Pharmaceutical Laboratory now owned by Reckitt Benckiser with this tunnel running between the two.
We discover the leak detection system and the specialist floor mounted lighting which are both Explosion Proof Compex requirements for gasses.
This tunnel has remained visually secret since its construction, the only documents I could find where referring to its existence but not its location.
The Entry Location has not been added to respect the landowners privacy. Please respect this and think before commenting.
My friend's Harry & Danny found this tunnel some time ago. Shout out to them.

This is the story of the ill fated Handley Page Halifax of the Royal Air Force No 78 Squadron. Tail Number JD151 Halifax Mk 2 code EY-M based at RAF Breighton in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
On 25 October 1939, the Halifax performed its maiden flight, and it entered service with the RAF on 13 November 1940. It quickly became a major component of Bomber Command, performing routine strategic bombing missions against the Axis Powers, many of them at night.
The Halifax was also flown in large numbers by other Allied and Commonwealth nations, such as the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), Free French Air Force and Polish forces.
Arthur Harris, the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Bomber Command, described the Halifax as inferior to the rival Lancaster (in part due to its smaller payload) though this opinion was not shared by many of the crews that flew it, particularly for the MkIII variant.[2] Nevertheless, production of the Halifax continued until April 1945. During their service with Bomber Command, Halifaxes flew a total of 82,773 operations and dropped 224,207 tons of bombs, while 1,833 aircraft were lost.
So the story of JD151;
On the night of 10th / 11th August 1943 the crew of this 78 Squadron aircraft were undertaking an operational flight to bomb Nürnberg, the English conventional name for the german city is Nuremberg.
This raid was later generally regarded as a failure. On their return to Yorkshire this aircraft was running out of fuel as they neared the base of Breighton, two of the engines then failed as he made the approach to land. At 06.19hrs the aircraft crashed near Wressle just off the runway. Sadly three of the seven crew died as a result of this accident. In more recent years a small memorial was erected in woodland near the crash site.
So the story continues with,
The final hours of DT524.
On the 7th September 1943 those on board this 1658 Heavy Conversion Unit aircraft took off from RAF Riccall 10.05hrs to undertake a fighter affiliation training flight, on board was a regular crew of seven trainees, working up to becoming an operational bomber crew. With them were three Heavy Conversion Unit Instructors.
This training exercise involved a Hurricane, to play the part of an enemy fighter aircraft, making simulated attacking passes towards the Halifax, with the crew of the Halifax keeping lookout for it, and the instructor pilot of the Halifax would then demonstrate taking evasive action.
The Hurricane pilot made several attacks and later stated that the evasive action taken was very effective during all but the final one.
When the final attacking pass was made the Halifax initially went into a 90 degree bank and the starboard outer engine emitted a considerable amount of smoke,

This annex of the nearby Lancaster Moor Hospital was opened in 1916 as a Ladies Villa, intended for lucrative private lady patients who required superior accommodation compared with that available in the main Lancaster Moor Hospital.
Lancaster Moor hospital opened in 1816 and closed for mental health patients in 1991. This impressive building still exists today and is now converted into private apartments for members of the public.
Meanwhile back at Ridge Lea, this structure formed another sizeable complex in it’s own right and stood some distance west of the Lancaster Moor Hospital, accessed separately from it’s own approaches from Stone Row Head alongside the Lancaster Cemetery.
The hospital was a pioneering site for the humane treatment of the mentally ill with the introduction of treatments such as electroconvulsive therapy.
This is a psychiatric treatment where a generalised seizure (without muscular convulsions) is electrically induced to manage refractory mental disorders.
up to 120 volts are applied externally to the patient's head, which results in around 800 milliamps of direct current passing through the brain, for short periods of time. This was used as a treatment for several mental disorders including mania and depression.
Ridge Lea Hospital first saw a decline in patients after the 1986 publication 'Making a Reality of Community Care' by the Audit Commission. This report outlined the slow progress in resettling people from long stay hospitals. It was this report which prompted the subsequent Green and White papers on community care.
Care in the Community is a British policy of deinstitutionalisation, treating and caring for physically and mentally disabled people in their homes rather than in an institution such as Ridge Lea Hospital.
British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher adopted a new policy of care in the community and subsequent governments harmonised this.
Ridge Lea Hospital closed in 2013 and is still owned by Lancashire and South Cumbria National Health Service Trust.

A permission visit managed and organised by NRR Tours – Thanks and a credit to Janine.
We are visiting the BCIMO and the future Metro system in Dudley, all part of the very light rail test centre.
About the BCIMO;
The Black Country Innovative Manufacturing Organisation (BCIMO) was set up to oversee the build, launch and operation of a new Very Light Rail (VLR) national innovation centre, to be built in Dudley. Our vision is to positively transform the UK rail industry, through the creation of new and more affordable VLR transport solutions.
Dudley Railway Tunnel is located near to the former Dudley railway station in Dudley, Birmingham in the United Kingdom.
Originally opening in 1850 to allow the Oxford-Worcester-Wolverhampton Line between Stourbridge and Wolverhampton to pass for several hundred yards beneath the hills of Dudley.
At Dudley the Oxford-Worcester-Wolverhampton Line and South Staffordshire Line to Walsall met.
The tunnel was regularly used by passenger trains until 1964, when the town's station closed along with the remaining passenger stations on the line.
The railway line through Dudley is scheduled to reopen in 2023 as part of an extension to the West Midlands Metro.
The former Blowers Green Railway Station, opening in 1878 by the Great Western Railway intending to serve the growing communities of Woodside and Netherton.
Being Renamed in around 1881 to Dudley Southside & Netherton, as it replaced Netherton station to the south.
Passenger numbers were good, and the station name was reverted to Blowers Green in 1921 and remained operational as a passenger station until closure to the public in 1962. Passenger trains still ran to Dudley on this section until 1964 when the line became solely freight until complete closure in 1993.

In Today’s video we venture back to the 1885 Beck Valley Storm Water Culvert which runs underneath the centre of Nottingham England. Its over two miles long and is constructed of Victoria Works bricks from Aldridge Staffordshire. I’m joined with Ant from @Trekking Exploration check him out.
We find many features in this tunnel and beck system, the architecture changes with the generations of modifications made along this tunnels life. We find two Geocache containers, a knife and many other interesting items along the way.
Built to cope with surface water from the rapid urbanisation of the east side of Nottingham. It originates with the 'Beck' which flowed from St Ann's Well roughly on the line of St Ann's Well Road, Huntingdon Street and Lower Parliament Street.
Joining the original River Leen a short distance east of the present London Road. To cope with the estimated maximum flow, based even then on a maximum recorded 1.4 inches (3.5 cm) in a 30 minute period, the culvert is 6 ft (1.8 m) diameter in its upper reaches, increasing to an oval cross section of 13ft 6 in x 9 ft 8 in (4.1 x 2.95 m).
