Ben Burgis explains what ad hominem arguments REALLY are, explores Kant’s categorical imperative, and argues that YOU MUST BE A SOCIALIST. One must embrace the revolution or risk treating people as if they’re merely vending machines.
Zero Books Manifesto: The modern world is at an impasse. Disasters scroll across our smartphone screens and we’re invited to like, follow or upvote, but critical thinking is harder and harder to find. Rather than connecting us in common struggle and debate, the internet has sped up and deepened a long-standing process of alienation and atomization.

Alienation, generational tensions, rampant nationalism and the pervasiveness of atomic danger are all topics that haunted late Soviet citizens, and those fears are reflected in the films meant to represent their horror genre.
In the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, production of horror movies from independent filmmakers and Hollywood skyrocketed. It was a time of intense Cold War conflict and a resurgence of conservative ideals. It’s not difficult to imagine that the ascent of horror occurred in conjunction with an increasingly scary and alienated world, and horror reflected those freights in the form of nuclear holocausts, toxic waste pollution, alien clown invaders and undead houseguests. Everyone was at risk - teenagers especially - because their present and future remained most uncertain.
If we can agree that such feelings underpinned American viewers in the age of Reagan and neo-liberalism, then what about late socialism? How did film makers depict Soviet society’s fears?

Ben Burgis is the author of the book "Give Them an Argument: Logic for the Left" and he is a regular contributor to the Zero Books channel, providing videos that examine right-wing and centrist arguments while looking for fallacies and flaws.

It argues that social media use is often a psychological response to the need for pleasure and comfort that results from the stresses of life under postmodern capitalism, rather than being a driver of new behaviours as newer technologies are often said to be. Both the explosive growth of social media and the corresponding reconfiguration of the web from an information-based platform into an entertainment-based one are far more easily explained in terms of the subjective psychological experience of their users as capitalist subjects seeking ‘depressive hedonia’ the book argues.
Filling the Void also interrogates the role of social media networks, designed for private commercial gain, as part of a de-facto public sphere. Both the decreasing subjective importance of factual media and the ways in which the content of the timeline are quietly manipulated – often using labour in the developing world and secret algorithms – have potentially serious implications for the capacity of social media users to query or challenge the seeming reality offered by the established hegemonic order.

Norman Finkelstein is a controversial figure on the left and he’s the guest this week. However, while Finkelstein is famous for his books about the Israel/Palestine conflict, we don’t discuss that topic, but instead discuss a book he’s working on entitled On Academic Freedom.

Zero Books is a critical theory and cultural criticism imprint published out of the UK, an imprint of John Hunt Publishing. We upload videos about critical theory every Saturday. On Thursday we release conversations with authors, philosophers, and radicals. The Zero Squared podcast and Pop the Left (with Derick Varn) are released on alternating Thursdays. On most Mondays, you’ll find videos about logic and leftism produced by Ben Burgis here too.
We hope that what we produce here will be useful to students, activists, and really to everyone who feels frustrated by the world as they’ve found it.
