How does the Neve Portico 5017 Sound? Awesome. This "mobile" preamp has a ton of gain, a silk circuit to add some coloration, a high pass filter, a compressor with a 2:1 ratio, a noise floor is better than -127dBA, and a D.I. section. This thing is awesome, but the control over the features is pretty limited and at $1400 it's a pretty penny.

Today I review the budget ribbon microphone, the MXL R144. This is a figure 8 ribbon mic that is only $100, significantly cheaper than the majority of ribbon mics. It is a very dark, and warm sounding mic and pairs decently with a brighter presence boosted dynamic like an SM57.

Today I walkthrough, explain, and review the Arturia 8-Pre. This device has some of the best preamps in an audio interface that I’ve ever come across. They offer up to 72dB of gain, and have an EIN of -129dBu. The awesome thing about this is it can function as ADAT expansion for another interface if you want to add 8 more preamps to your setup.

Today I review a relatively affordable clone of the U47, the Warm Audio WA-47 Jr. This has a slight midforward sound with a slower sounding treble range making it sound less detailed and articulate. In my opinion this culminates into a more vintage sounding tone. If you're buying this microphone, buy it because you like the sound of this microphone, not because you like the U47.
