Remixed by Kim Jong-Un. Funkin' for Jamaica in da DPRK! Kim Jong-Un is comin' hard on this track from my kiddie days back in 1980. This song never got an extended remix back in 1980 - or if there was one, I was not aware of it but I usually believe I would have gotten wind of it from KSOL, which would play remixed versions of these jams. There was a 1991 UK remix by Drizabone that I managed to miss out on, but I'm attributing that to having newly moved to Denver, and finding import remixes was hit or miss. If I had been still living in the Bay Area, I most likely would have seen it at the import record stores "Butch Wax" or "Record Rack" in San Francisco, even Tower Records got some import releases. Well this song has gotten it's due in the form of remixes. As of this I found a remix by John Morales of M&M fame that was uploaded in 2017 so how the hell did I miss it? John Morales has been making a comeback as of late but minus Sergio Munzubia (RIP). DjDiscoCat just put up his remix a couple days ago as this upload. Just as I saw his remix, I was just discovering this remix from Kimmy who really give this jam a work over. Nicknamed the "Funkin' DPRK Street Mix" - yeah it's a play on words. Perhaps I should have proceed the nickname with "Mother" but oh well - because the song has always had a street feel with it's chatter through out with Toni Smith's (and yes I thought it was Chaka Khan too) vocals coming in for the choruses. Kimmy gives this anthem that pays homage to a neighborhood in New York (I was not aware of this but thought he was referring to the country) ten-minute plus extended version. He starts things with a bare-bones approach the bringing in the chatter then the kick and then bust into full swing just before Toni Smith's vocals come in. Just as the chorus finishes, the drums drop out and the bass plays nearly solo with some reverb added giving the mix a dub-like feel then the piano comes back and the music kicks back into full swing for an instrumental interlude during what is usually the second chorus. The mix then revisits the second verse but with the chatter track up over only the drums. I really dig the breakdown with only the guitar going at 6:29, it continues for a few bars then the beats drop out and the dub-sounding bass comes back and then the mix slowly builds up again. It's a real roller-coaster if only I could be on the dance floor... in Pyongyang.... and with Kim Jong-Un spinning the records, hee hee. Well I'm sick of the USA and all it's crazy-ass people! Oops let me get back on track. The beats come back and the mix is pretty much a bass solo from which the mix builds up as it heads into the final chorus with Mrs. Smith returning for the grand finale at 9:11. Don't say a word, hee hee. I love how the drumming and percussion gets intense at 9:45 with double kick-drum hits, and lots of cymbal crashing, all which go well with Smith's impassioned vocals about "Jamaica Funk". This part does not appear on the original mix, perhaps the Marshal had someone add some more percussion or they are on the multi-tracks.
