The USS Yorktown (CV-5) had a distinguished and impactful service record during World War II, despite her relatively short time in action. Commissioned on September 30, 1937, Yorktown was a Yorktown-class aircraft carrier designed to enhance the U.S. Navy's offensive capabilities with greater aircraft capacity, improved armament, and robust design. She quickly became a pivotal asset in the Pacific Theater.
In early 1942, Yorktown's initial engagements reflected the growing intensity of the Pacific conflict. She first participated in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands raid in February 1942, showcasing her striking power against Japanese installations. This early success was a prelude to her critical involvement in the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942. The battle was the first naval engagement where aircraft carriers played the central role, and it marked a significant shift in naval warfare. Yorktown's air group was instrumental in sinking the Japanese carrier Shōhō and damaging Shōkaku, although Yorktown herself was damaged.
