Ebenezer
Samuel took a stone... and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us. Israel had fallen away from God. The people's hearts had turned to idols.

The Philistines waged a war. Four thousand of the warriors of Israel were slain. And again. Another 30,000 men. And the ark of God was taken. The people of God knew defeat after defeat.

Samuel calls the people to repentance: 1 Samuel 7:3-4 …return unto the LORD with all your hearts, …put away the strange gods …prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you...

God wrought a great victory for them. And their enemies returned the Ark of the Covenant - that sign of God’s presence and power.

Ebenezer was a monument, a marker; “The stone of help”. Samuel set this landmark so that the Israelites would not forget the intervention of God. We all could use a reminder of God’s grace and help.

Twenty years before, right here, the people of God had suffered a great defeat. They had been unfaithful. The glory had departed. Thousands had been slain in battle. It had been the place of disobedience.

At Ebenezer Samuel cries out to the Lord for help. The Lord gave victory. Ebenezer was a memorial stone of victory, of worship. A sign of thankfulness. We recall the mercies and grace of God. His great help.

Ebenezer is a marker of GOD'S VICTORY. The Ebenezer stone was erected on a battlefield - where they had been twice defeated. It reminded them of their battles, and of their own helplessness. And failures.

Ebenezer had been a place… of trouble, of hardship. Samuel cried out to the Lord… And at Ebenezer… Victory was won. He has truly won the victory for us! Our fight is with a defeated enemy. At Calvary, the Lord Jesus won a Victory for us… A Decisive one. A Resounding one. An Eternal one. We see God's great power! There at Calvary… There, the Lord Jesus conquered for us.

As the people were gathered here, to worship the Lord, they were not armed for a fight. There was prayer and sacrifice. They looked to the Lamb. They looked to the Lord… He gave great victory.

1 Samuel 7:11 And the men of Israel …pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Bethcar. Bethcar means house of the Lamb. Our victory is because of the Lamb. Our victory is BY the lamb. At Ebenezer, we give our praise. We give all the glory to God. God fights for His people.

Ebenezer is a marker also of… GOD'S MERCY. Peace was restored to Israel. Lam. 3:22-23, It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Ebenezer is a place we realise God has had His hand on us in times past… Taking us through, g
