Ep. 4 - Irrational Voters, Anarcho-Capitalist Law, and the Case Against Education | Dr. Bryan Caplan
Do democracies really make the best decisions? Should we encourage everyone to vote, even if they don't understand the issues?
I am joined today by Dr. Bryan Caplan, who is a professor of economics at George Mason University. He's also the author of "The Myth of the Rational Voter" (http://amzn.to/1Wn9xi4), which takes a skeptical look at the reliability of voting.
We also discuss the educational establishment, from K-12 to Higher Ed, and Dr. Caplan proposes what he calls the "signaling model" of education.
The future of intellectual progress will not belong to ivory tower academics. It will belong to self-studied intellectuals, who can capitalize on the recent decentralization of knowledge. Academia will be reserved for those with strong tendencies towards group-think.

A year ago, I started Patterson in Pursuit. Ten countries later, I've learned a thing or two, and I want to share my thoughts.
Topics include academia, multiculturalism, traveling, religion, and some new ideas I've encountered on my journey.

The world outside our mind is actually glued together; relations are mind-independent; and patterns are objectively real.

"Experiencing an alien abduction" is not the same thing as "being abducted by aliens." Subtle difference with huge implications.
Your friend might insist that he's been abducted. That's OK - there's one way to make sense of his claims without thinking he's crazy or a liar. He might be truthfully reporting his experiences without correctly identifying the cause of those experience.
Just because I dreamed that elephants were riding unicycles doesn't mean that elephants were actually riding unicycles.

For years, I've been making anti-Platonist arguments. Now, I think I was wrong. The universe seems to be composed of both concrete and abstract stuff.

Ultimately, there's no difference between science, religion, and philosophy. All are trying to answer the question, "What's going on around here?"
