Sure, polarizes can be explained by reading a long Wikipedia article about the subject, but wouldn't it be more interesting, more memorable, and most importantly, more fun, to learn about polarizes by playing with them.
Grab a pair or 3D glasses from a movie that you're stuck seeing in 3D, take 'em home with you, and play with them in front of a mirror. Snap them in half and play with the two lenses stacked together.
The moment you snap them in half and stack one over another and look through them both, you will realize the truth: polarizers are "Jail bars for really skinny light".
