Hard Times Gravy Recipe- she survived great depression with this gravy that costs a nickel
This is a recipe for Hard Times Gravy that costs a nickel. I remember an old lady saying years ago that she and her family were able to survive the Great Depression from mainly three food items; pancakes, dumplings, and gravy.
This makes sense as wheat flour is probably the least expensive food item and is perfect for making pancakes and dumplings. I remember as a kid when we were very poor we knew when there was no money as our mom would make pancakes with homemade syrup for supper.
Dumplings are great for adding to soups and stews and are very filling and if there is any meat any fat or drippings leftover are best used up as a gravy or sauce so nothing goes to waste.
This gravy will not taste as rich and flavorful as gravy made from roasted meat or fowl. This is gravy for when you have no meat or fowl and for when you have very little money. if you are stony broke and just have potatoes or rice or vegetables this sauce or gravy will be welcome addition to make the plain food during hard times taste better.
I made my gravy in a very simple way using Orrington farms powdered beef broth.
You can make the gravy as thin or thick as you like by adding or subtracting your oil and flour roux.
There is a lot of sodium in Orrington Farms powdered broth but no MSG and very few if any Frankenstein ingredients often found in other powdered gravy mixes.
I normally add a lot of spices to my gravy and items that darken it.
