What a beautifully crafted game this is. The graphics look fantastic and the story draws you right into the fantastic science fiction world that is presented in the game. The characters are charming and interesting and the music and sounds are very fitting. Only the gameplay is missing, it is more like an interactive comic book where you just click through the dialogs and even that is hard and a bit unresponsive at times, still, I want more! Breakfast on Trappist-1 is another entry on the 2021 Adventure Jam and takes you to another planet of said name, the planet is special as it has no day and night cycle but is stationary with the parts that point towards the sun. You are the unnamed protagonist and you have a girlfriend that is a refugee from planet Evergreen and considers going back or going to Unity space station, that is said to be a haven for refugees. You of course want her to stay and destroy these wishes but make another dream come true, that is have a tea house on planet Trappist. So you need to convince her to stay and find some money to buy an old gasstation to turn into a tea house. Cool lineart by lorenzo depict planet Trappist in all its glory and graphics and make you want to stay with the sad story of your girlfriend and with the happy end. Sadly with the first person perspective on everything we will never know how the protagonist looks (or what his name is). The FPV also account for no animations in the game, every change in scenery is happening while the screen blacks out, but for a jamgame this is very okay. The music is not original to the game and for that could have been more tracks, it gets repetitive after a while. The puzzles in the game is okay and you never feel lost in the world but also they are very easy and straight forward. You check in at a motel at the end of the world and then the horror unfolds. that is the basic story of a really short game for a horror gamejam. The backdrops are AI art with some pixels overpainted, just look at the bathroom, the toiletpaper is there but at the other end of the room from the toilet, great planning only a machine would do. When compared to the overpainted parts like the corner of the rug with the backdrops you see the difference in artstyle. And the mixed pixel resolution is also tellingabout this. But those generated artworks make a moody game, the developers still have to program all this and I am not sure how far machine learning image generators can help you with making a pixelart character walkcycle. Still I don't get why the makes of the game don't mention the involvement of some text to image tool at all, that would only be fair. But enough of that, let me mention the music and it is really moody and good. There are not many puzzles in the game, I discovered the escape route before needing it, but when you are stressed this might be harder to do. The rest of the story is very cliche and the end is just weird and confusing. Made for the Ludum Dare 50 in 2 days this game is quite the accomplishment. It is fun to go through the spaceship and uncover the secrets. The puzzles are not that great but the game is fully voice and has beautiful pixelart graphics. Especially the voicing sounds convincing and is great for a 2 day jam game. The music is very minimalistic but fitting and atmospheric.
