This is a fanedit attempt to bring together the TOS Star Trek movies as a focus on Spock's development from logical to emotional, from Vulcan to human, from living to dead to living again, from confused to conflicted to clear. They will not be as plot-driven as the movies, but rather will point the spotlight on Spock's advances during his adventures aboard the USS Enterprise.
Spock has always been one of my favourite Trek characters, mostly because of his duality but also because he plays by a code that few can understand but the curious. He is driven by an impulse that even Kirk finds reckless and unpredictable, but he also demonstrates that his judgment in the end is wisest in service of the many.
I've begun work on a draft of Star Trek III.V: Kolinahr, which is an unusual move for me. I would never presume myself to be any sort of Trekker beyond being an enjoyer of much of what was produced in the 20th century. However, I began to piece together a do-able fanedit in my mind that took form this afternoon ignoring pressing demand to finish other work. Perhaps this is blasphemy to some, fascinating to others and most illogical to the rest. To me, it is simply a human endeavor to revive a character that I feel gets more buried with every new incarnation and ignite an interest in the original as some have forgotten or never knew. After all: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..."
I'm in love with the character of Spock and relate to him in as many ways as I am baffled. His role in the "Holy Trinity" of Trek not only cements him in the lore as one of the all-time most important characters in Star Trek, but in pop culture as a hole. They just cannot leave him be.
The goal of this project is to string together elements from all of the TOS movies, to place more focus on Spock's humanity that he so desperately sought to purge all of his life. Despite his uncanny logic, his humanity shone through on several occasions, including his dauntless efforts to preserve Klingon and Romulan life late in his active years. It is arguable that his conflict with his captain and best friend, James T. Kirk might reflect a lack of humanity, that his "needs of the many" mentality overtook any emotion he may have, but Spock was always a being who could combine logic with his true feelings. He knew that Kirk would come around, even to embrace a sworn enemy at his own expense. Spock's attempt to seek absolute truth never failed him, even when his discoveries damn near destroy him.
Much of this fanedit's footage revolves around Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, where Kirk seeks to bring both Spock's body and katra to the Vulcan homeworld as a final resting place upon Sarek's urgings. Kirk and his senior officers steal the decommissioned Enterprise from Starbase to journey back to the forbidden zone of Genesis, where they had last left Spock's remains. They get into a little trouble along the way in the form of a renegade Klingon and his crew. To make further sense of this story, I must also include scenes from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. There are essential points of exposition that will help audiences new to TOS Star Trek movies to understand who Kirk, Spock and perhaps even McCoy are, and of course to explain what the Genesis Project is and how Spock was killed in sacrifice for his crew. This will be a VERY delicate operation, but I hope to do it successfully without offending die-hards as a singularity.
This will be a tricky attempt at storytelling, as I plan to insert scenes from latter movies past part III, showing him at his finest. My hope is that fans will forego their understanding of these scenes' contextual timeline and setting, and will accept them as some kind of timeless "flashback/flash forward" offering. This will not attempt to put Spock in a very different light, as Leonard Nimoy's performance is brilliantly consistent. Nimoy's Spock simply does not break down more than he does express himself with emphasis when required. Spock does not ever give into any emotional urges, but will give displays of courtesy or force when it seems appropriate.
Additionally, I will create some animated PNG visual effects to enhance the existing optical effects to add a vivid and striking boost to the FX shots, as well as a depth of field wherever possible. I've run a few experiments where I felt a little spice could be added and I think you'll like what I have come up with.
Hopefully, I will manage to finish this mess in reasonable time. I have insane deadlines that I am being irresponsible with, and so this is definitely a backburner project that I will be stirring on the regular. What I wish to hear from all of you is: what scenes in Wrath of Khan or Search for Spock do you feel I must absolutely keep, and which ones do you feel I should absolutely cut out to shorten the length?
Non-belligerent replies, please. I'll take fair and constructive criticism for the sake of improvement.
Lastly: "Live Long and Prosper" is another title I had in mind, but I feel it's too corny.
