Cristiano Ronaldo and his agent Jorge Mendes will donate three intensive care units to Portuguese hospitals to help them deal with the Covid-19 epidemic, the hospitals said on Tuesday.
The two Portuguese will offer "two intensive care units", with a "capacity of ten beds each" at the University Hospital Center of Lisbon North (CHULN), told AFP a spokesman for this establishment.
Equipment will include beds, respirators and heart monitors: "essential equipment to assist patients with Covid-19," said a hospital statement.
Jorge Mendes and his friend Ronaldo will also make a similar donation to the Santo Antonio hospital at the Porto University Hospital Center (north).
"This is a very important investment which includes more than a dozen respirators and other necessary equipment," explained Eurico Castro Alves, director of the surgery department of this establishment, to the daily Jornal de Noticias, adding that this unit would bear their names.
"If necessary, Cristiano Ronaldo wants to do the same in Madeira", his native island, he added.
Madeira has 11 confirmed cases of Covid-19 out of the 2,362 enumerated in the country, which recorded 33 deaths, according to the last official report.
The five-time Golden Ball is now in Madeira, where he had gone to visit his mother, who is recovering from a stroke. He was placed there in isolation after his Juventus Turin teammate Daniele Rugani tested positive.
Authorities in the archipelago said on May 12 that the player had no symptoms of the disease
