A few months ago I scored a deal on a "broken" high end minidisc recorder with a working screen (for which this model is notorious for) but simply couldn't read discs. Fast forward to last week I found yet another unit which had the exact opposite problem, reads discs but dead display. It was at that moment that I knew what my calling was ... I must unite these two dying units and from their ashes will arise one fully working one.
In all seriousness though ever since I first laid eyes on this particular model I've wanted one but they are very expensive so I've been waiting years for just the right chance to find broken units which could be repaired and that time has finally come. This video unfortunately isn't a step by step how-to but rather a general explanation of the process. I wish I could've filmed the entire process, but the parts are so fiddly and delicate that I really needed my full attention. If you attempt something similar just be aware how costly these units are, how rare replacement parts are, and that I cannot be held responsible for any damage for those who attempt a similar repair.

Since I can't wait and don't have the expendable income for the upcoming Nintendo mini NES I've decided to make my own better version with parts I have lying around. The Raspberry Pi A+ is running Retropie with a host of retro emulators and ROMs loaded up on a 32GB micro SD card. I've 3D printed the case on my Prusa i3 off Thingiverse and painted it up to match the NES color scheme. The biggest issue I've faced is the Raspberry Pi's lack of a power switch. So in this video I program a microcontroller to handle turning on and off the Pi properly. Now all I need to finish up is the wiring and final details.

ICStation once again has kindly sent me a bluetooth audio module to make something with. I have this old small tabletop altec lansing stereo that sounds great but has a zune dock port that I have no use for so in this video I show how to hack the zune dock to use it for bluetooth instead! In the end this module was super easy to wire with and works great! I'll definitely pick up a few more of them to add to other future audio projects.

Just a random quick video of me unwrapping a pack of 8 new minidiscs I scored on ebay for $20 while I reminisce about the format.

My first experience with TI's wonderful class d amp chip in a dip package. It's much louder than it sounds in the video but my phone's mic can't do it justice.

So while I wait till I can go back home and work on my retro arcade project I though I could at least get some more software/hardware features that I want hammered out. I found some really cheap clear/white led lit arcade buttons so I snapped them up and thought to myself: "these must have individually controllable RGB LEDs installed in them".
I've played with WS2812 serial RGB LEDs before using an arduino so my idea is to have custom color palettes that are tied to button mappings that activate whenever you open an emulator in retropie. This way only buttons that are used are illuminated and the colors will give an intuitive hint at what function is mapped to it. ... Plus it looks really cool. For instance pulling up an SNES game will color the buttons in a super famicom color scheme and etc. All buttons are white while sitting at the main menu and off when the system turns off obviously.
I've demonstrate the final working setup consisting of three parts in this video: a bash script that determines which console system emulator is currently running, a python script that that is then called to send a control signal about the currently running system over digital outputs, and the connected arduino that reads this control signal and sets the colors accordingly as well as watches the buttons so it can timeout and display a rainbow pattern if no button is pressed for more than 30 seconds while on the menu. Everything works great and I cant wait to wire up all the final parts once I get time and everything arrives in the mail.
This can all even be expanded in the future to do something crazy like read the game rom name, pull up some marquee/box artwork and display it on an LCD while you are playing a game. The sky is the limit (and my wallet/time)!

I was contacted by Apeman about their new 2K dashcam and the timing was perfect as my current one has baked for the last two years in my car and was on its final legs. In this video we take a look at what ~$100 will net you in a dashcam in terms of features and recording quality. I was lucky enough to get a decent snow storm as well so I just had to test the timelapse functionality as well! Does it live up to the spec list? Watch to find out!
