Unclaimed human remains are cremated and their ashes put in little plastic bags with their name if known and then held for a certain amount of time in case someone claims them. If not they bury all these bags of ashes together. How ironic is that. All these people who lived isolated and alone, no one even knew or cared they died now their all buried together. Crazy ironic. I read this story in the paper many years ago and wrote this song about it.
Railroad Bill is a classic traditional folk song. Many different verses and ways to play it. I tried to get as many verses in as I could. I play it on the mountain banjo clawhammer style. With story intro and outro.
Railroad Bill - lyrics
Railroad Bill, Railroad Bill
He never worked, and he never will,
And it's ride, ride, ride.
Railroad Bill's a mighty mean man
Shot the light out of the poor brakeman's hand
Railroad Bill, up on a hill
Lightin' a cigar with a ten-dollar bill.
Railroad Bill took my wife,
If I didn't like it, gonna take my life.
Goin' on a mountain, goin' out west
Thirty-eight special stickin' out of my vest.
Buy me a pistol just as long as my arm
Shoot everybody ever done me harm.
Got a thirty eight-special in a forty-five frame,
I can't miss 'cause I got dead aim.
Railroad Bill, he ain't so bad
Whupped his mama, shot his old dad.
Early one morning, standing in the rain
Round the bend come a long freight train.
Railroad Bill a comin' home soon
Killed McMillan by the light of the moon
Kill me a chicken, send me the wing
They think I'm workin', Lord, I ain't doin' a thing.
Gonna drink my whiskey, drink it in the wind
The doctor said it'd kill me but he didn't say when.

The Unquiet Grave is an old spooky folk ballad.
The Unquiet Grave - Lyrics & Chords
Child Ballad 78
The Unquiet Grave featured in Penny Dreadful, season 2.
Chords: verses - Am C G/Am F Am.....Refrains - C G Am/ C F G/ Am C G/Am F Am
Cold blows the wind to my true love,
And gently falls the rain.
I never had but one true love,
And in greenwood he lies slain.
I’ll do as much for my true love
As any a young girl may.
I’ll sit and mourn all on his grave
For twelve months and a day.
And when twelve months and a day had passed,
The ghost did rise and speak,
“Why do you sit all on my grave
And will not let me sleep?”
‘Tis I, ’tis I, thine own true love
That sits all on your grave
I ask one kiss from your sweet lips
And that is all that I crave.
My breast is cold as the clay;
My breath is earthly strong.
And if you kiss my cold, clay lips,
You’re days will not be long.
How oft on yonder grave, Sweetheart
Where we were wont to walk—
The fairest flower that e're I saw
Has withered to a stalk.
When will we meet again, sweetheart?
When will we meet again?
When the autumn leaves that fall from the trees
Are green and spring up again,

Hang Me Oh Hang Me (Been All Around This World) is a Traditional Folk Song I play on the Mountain Banjo in the Clawhammer overhand style.
Hang Me Oh Hang Me (Been All Around This World)
Words and music
Banjo in C tuning
Hang me, oh hang me, I`ll be dead and gone
Hang me, oh hang me, I`ll be dead and gone
I wouldnt mind the hangin` but that laying
In the grave so long I been all around this world
Working on the new rail line, mud up to my knees
Working on the new rail line, mud up to my knees
Working for ol John Henry he`s a-mighty hard to please
I been all around this world
Went up on the mountain there I took my stand
Went up on the mountain there I took my stand
Rifle on my shoulder, six shooter in my hand
I been all around this world
Lulu oh Lulu come open up this door
Lulu oh Lulu come open up this door
Before I have to open it with my ol` 44
I been all around this world
Momma and poppa and little sister makes three
Momma and poppa and little sister makes three
When they take me down to the gallows that`ll be the last they see of me
I been all around this world
Hang me, oh hang me, I`ll be dead and gone
Hang me, oh hang me, I`ll be dead and gone
I wouldnt mind the hangin` but that laying
In the grave so long I been all around this world

The Stars Will Shine Forever Over You is a poem written by Jesse Stuart. I liked it so much I made up a song for it. Below is the whole poem in its entirety as written by Jesse Stuart.
The Stars Will Shine Forever Over You - Jesse Stuart Poem (1936)
The stars will shine forever over you,
But they will never reach down to your face:
And the dead leaves will hover over you
To leave a blanket on your resting place.
In summer burdock leaves will flap and wave
And sumac will grow and spit red leaves
The will lodge on a net, brown love-vine weaves
And webs that spiders weave above your grave.
You will not care for rhymes and gold leaves
when you lie in this place I am speaking of.
I don`t think you will know about them then,
And I don`t think that you will dream of love
When you lie blind to drifting skies above,
Out of the womb of woman at your birth.
At death you go back to the womb of earth

The Carpool Dummy
Written and performed by
Dan D. Dirges
Well I`m so sick and tired of getting stuck in traffic
So I had an idea that was so fantastic
I bought a blow up doll from the local sex shop
Got her in some clothes, put a wig on top
I`m gonna fool them cops wait an see
With my carpool dummy riding next to me
Well I blew my baby doll up full of air
She was looking mighty fine like she just dont care
I lit up a smoke put it tween her lips
Sounds kinda crazy but its worth the risk
I`m gonna fool them cops wait and see
With my carpool dummy riding next to me
I was cruising along doing sixty five
Thouh the freeway was jammed I never broke my stride
People looked at me like I`d gone insane
But I bet they only wish they had half my brains.
I`m gonna fool them cops yes siree
With my carpool dummy riding next to me
Well the cops were making their highway checks
When the smoke fell out and burned a hole in her dress
Well they pulled me over for to have a look
When she started to deflate my goose was cooked
Say could you let me slide here this one time
I`ll lose the carpool dummy and I`ll fall in line
Well the judge never thought it all that funny
He said open up your wallet lets see some money
When I got back home I patched up my dummy
Much to my surprise she called me honey
Well I can feel the love its starting to grow
For my carpool dummy who will never say no
=================================
Oh man this ones crazy! lol - Guy buys a blow up doll and puts her in the passenger seat to try and fool the cops so he can ride in the carpool lane but gets caught and hit with a hefty fine but there`s a happy ending. Turns out his blow up doll can talk and they end up falling in love and living happily ever after! hahaha - Get a chance to play power chords in this one too!

The Foggy Foggy Dew or The Foggy Dew is a very ancient folk ballad. Looks like I got some words mixed up. I play it on guitar using the fingerpicking pattern of T I M I R I M I with vocal accompaniment.
Foggy, Foggy Dew - lyrics
When I was a bachelor, I lived all alone,
I worked at the weaver’s trade.
And the only, only thing that I did that was wrong
Was to woo a fair young maid.
I wooed her in the wintertime, and part of the summer too.
And the only, only thing that I did that was wrong
Was to keep her from the foggy, foggy dew.
One night she knelt close by my side
When I was fast asleep.
She threw her arms around my neck
And then began to weep.
She wept, she cried, she tore her hair, ah, me, what could I do?
So all night long I held her in my arms
Just to keep her from the foggy, foggy dew.
Again I’m a bachelor, I live with my son,
We work at the weaver’s trade.
And every single time I look into his eyes,
He reminds me of the fair young maid.
He reminds me of the wintertime, and part of the summer too,
And the many, many times that I held her in my arms,
Just to keep her from the foggy, foggy dew.

A Hope To Live- lyrics
There`s a child practicing their music. A trumpet to sloppy to be sure
Their so trying to get out of that building but their feet are nailed to the floor
And it`s a beatiful thing yes it is. It`s a thing that gives me hope to live
Somebody`s looking for their voice in an open window with their supper on the stove
And you can hear just going down the street. Singing and playing out of beat
Someone whose life has had no reason. Making up a reason of their own
And it`s a beatiful thing yes it is. It`s a thing that gives me hope to live
Somebody`s looking for their voice in an open window with their supper on the stove
There`s a man shadow boxing in the doorway. With their eyes close I know he`s gonna win
He`s kicking the trash out of the way. He goes down but he always gets up again
And it`s a beatiful thing yes it is. It`s a thing that gives me hope to live
Somebody`s looking for their voice in an open window with their supper on the stove
There`s a woman standing at the bus stop. She`s yelling that the world is on fire
The cop`s come running clumsy and discusted. Every thing they say she says they are alive
And it`s a beatiful thing yes it is. It`s a thing that gives me hope to live
Somebody`s looking for their voice in an open window with their supper on the stove
Everyone is lost among the buildings. The ruins that we leave will last forever
Though everything that`s said may be forgotten. There`s something that connects us like a river
And it`s a beatiful thing yes it is. It`s a thing that gives me hope to live
Somebody`s looking for their voice in an open window with their supper on the stove

Take Me Home Country Roads was a HUGE massive hit back in the early 1970`s. John Denver recorded it. I came up with this Banjo 3 finger like arrangement. (I only had two finger working though)
Take Me Home, Country Roads Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Almost Heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, growing like a breeze
[Chorus]
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
[Verse 2]
All my memories gather 'round her
Miner's lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye
[Chorus]
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
[Bridge]
I hear her voice in the morning hour, she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
Driving down the road, I get a feeling
That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
[Outro]
Take me home, (Down) country roads
Take me home, (Down) country roads
