Heads up to mah breverens if you get a call for a no ice or water complaint on a Bosch B36CL refrigerator...
For some weird reason, customers will fail to disclose that they recently replaced the water filter with a non-OEM generic filter. And then, Shazam, no more ice or water. "Golly, I wonder what it could be? Gosh, I better spend a month trying to get a Bosch warranty servicer out to tell me what should have been plainly obvious: the filter is the problem."
One of the first questions you need to ask when you're booking these calls is "did you recently install a non-OEM water filter in the fridge?"

A Parts Changing Monkey (PCM) attempted to fix a GE gas cooktop that was not sparking on any burner by simply replacing two parts: the transformer and the spark module. No troubleshooting, just shooting from the hip, blindly replacing parts and hoping to get lucky.
Well, he didn't get lucky.
And besides, real technicians don't rely on luck to get things fixed. We rely on knowledge and the skillful application of that knowledge to troubleshoot and identify the problem.
In this video, I show you how a professional technician would approach the problem using a systematic troubleshooting approach.

This is an excerpt from a longer Master Samurai Tech webinar on the Samurai system for nailing service calls each and every time. In this webinar for the ages, the Samurai explains everything you need to know to run a successful service call, minimizing return trips and maximizing profits. He covers the steps you need to take before the call and how you need to think while on the call. All of this information is neatly and concisely presented as The Samurai System for Service Call Excellence -- a must-know for any tech who wants to make the most money for the least headache.
The topics covered include:
- Developing a System for ensuring accurate problem diagnoses on the first trip
- Common model number mistakes
- How to avoid looking like a dummy in front of the customer
- Walking into the service call with a troubleshooting game plan already in mind
- Selecting strategic troubleshooting locations to eliminate unnecessary disassembly
- Understanding explicit and implicit specifications and how to use them to effectively troubleshoot
- Recognizing when specifications are omitted
- Analytical and non-analytical troubleshooting techniques vs. playing Lotto
- Formulating clear and concise Problem Statements from customer descriptions and using that Problem Statement to direct your troubleshooting
- War-gaming the Problem Statement on the schematic to identify the Load of Interest (LOI)
- Handling situations where multiple boards are involved with no specifications
- Why we don’t rely on ohms or volts to test AC circuits

While we don't like to rely on ohms testing as appliance technicians, those tests have their place -- such as if you want to identify a split phase compressor's start and run windings.
To do so, you have to have a little bit of knowledge about how split-phase compressor windings are arranged, and what their specifications are. Fortunately for you, that's exactly what we teach in this excerpt from one of our many full-length technical training webinars. Give it a watch!

The oven was not firing up in this three-year-old Frigidaire gas range. I troubleshot the problem to a defective bake igniter, insufficient current draw to open the gas valve. I replaced the bake igniter only to then reveal that the gas valve had failed, too. In this case, the gas valve now opens but it fails to close all the way, allowing gas to continue to flow. Again, keep in mind: this range is only three years old! I am seeing these types of premature failures with increasing frequency, particularly in lower-end appliances of all brands. If the customer had replaced the igniter himself, he would have thought "mission accomplished," oblivious to the dangerous situation he just created.
Moral of the story:
You don't know what you don't know and what you don't know CAN kill you!

In this year-end vodcast, Samurai Appliance Repair Man and the Mrs. Samurai do some reminiscing about all the great students we’ve worked with during 2015, the new features we’ve added to the Samurai Tech Academy's state-of-the-art online appliance repair training courses and we describe even more improvements coming in 2016!
New features already in place:
- Midterm exam with open answers in Fundamentals: challenging, enlightening, empowering.
- Weekly live webinar “Office Hours” with the Samurai for students: powerful presentations and illuminating Q&A.
Exciting announcement: even though we’ve increased the features and benefits of the Academy, the tuition is NOT increasing! Instead, we have changed to a continuing access fee model. When you enroll in a course, you receive full access for 1 year (2 years if you purchase a bundle), then you can opt to continue paying a very small monthly fee for access after that time period. (Note: this does not affect students who have already enrolled.)
More flexibility in 2016: we are changing the nature of the quizzes - they will no longer be “blocking” - leaving it up to each student to personalize their learning experience.
Oh, one more thing… In our enthusiasm to describe all the exciting goings-on at Master Samurai Tech, we forgot to mention our year-end tuition special! D’OH! Use coupon code SUPERTECH2016 at get a 10% tuition discount off any Samurai Tech Academy course or course bundle! This coupon is good through January 6, 2016.
Merry Christmas!

Did you know that all hermetic compressors have standard 3-pin electrical connections? It does not matter which type of motor or compressor is in the refrigerator. You will always see 3 pins, even if all 3 are not being used!
Learn more about hermetic compressors and refrigerators by signing up for Master Samurai Tech's online Advanced Refrigerator Repair training course here: https://mastersamuraitech.com/online-appliance-repair-courses/refrigerator-repair/.
This is tricky. If you find 3 pins it could mean it's a linear motor. There are different ways to know though, as this video tells us, but checking the schematic will always demonstrate linear compressor or split phase motors or another.
