Have you ever wondered how that cream actually moisturizes your skin? Or how a lipstick makes those lips so glossy and plump? Or what gives that shimmery, sparkly finish to those bronzers and blushers? Well, you're about to find out, and the answer is a whole lot grosser than you may have first thought! 1. Collagen. This ingredient supposedly plumps your lips and can be injected beneath the skin as an antiwrinkle treatment or taken orally as a health supplement, however the only real source of collagen is from slaughterhouse waste products such as sinews, cartilage, bones, and teeth. These waste products are boiled and a gelatin layer forms on top, this gelatin is then purified by removing unwanted fats and salts before adding it to your favorite lip-plumping lipstick. 2. Guanine. What gives that shimmering sparkly finish to that nail polish, lipstick, or mascara? Well, it is probably an ingredient called Guanine or CI-75170, although Guanine can be synthesized, its most common origin is crushed fish scales or bird poop. 3. Lanolin. If you use waterproof makeup products or have dry skin, or chapped lips, before you reach for your mascara or lip balm, you may want to check the ingredients list for something called "Lanolin". This ingredient is actually produced naturally by sheep! They secrete it from their sebaceous glands to create a waxy layer that keeps their wholly coats dry. After steering the sheep, the wool is washed and the Lanolin extracted. 4. Carmine. Red or pink lipstick, blush, or nail polish will generally contain something called Carmine or Cochineal, this ingredient is usually obtained from the female cochineal beetle. This beetle is native to South America and the southwest of North America and feeds on prickly pear cacti. The fruit gives the beetle an intense red color that is then extracted from its body and eggs by drying and crushing the insects and then mixing them with aluminium or calcium salt to make the Carmine dye. 5. Sodium Tallowate. What gives your shampoo, cleanser, soap, or cream its moisturizing properties? Well, on the ingredients list you'll probably see either, Sodium Tallowate, Stearic Acid, Oleic Acid, Lauric Acid, Palmitic Acid, or Myristic Acid. These are refined fatty acids that generally come from cow, sheep, or pig fat that is extracted by boiling their carcasses and removing the fat that rises to the top. 6. Glucosamine Glucosamine appears in many anti-aging products and moisturizers because it apparently enhances hyaluronic acid and collagen production. Most Glucosamine used in the cosmetic industry is extracted from shellfish. Crab, shrimp, and lobster shells are crushed and ground up and then demineralized in vinegar, then the protein is removed using lye or potassium hydroxide. 7. Keratin. You've probably seen "Keratin" written in bold letters on your shampoo bottle and maybe you know that it's actually present in our own hair and nails, but the Keratin in your shampoo actually comes from grinding up animal horns, hooves, nails, and hair. Some products only use keratin from bird feathers because they claim it gives your hair a smoother and silkier feel. Other weird beauty ingredients include: Placenta, which appears in the ingredients as Placental Polypeptide Protein, Animal pee, which appears as Urea or Carbamide, Shark liver oil, which appears as Squalene or Squalane, and Snail slime, which appears as Helix Aspersa Müller. We always trust in our government to build nicer roads to drive our fancy cars on. But sometimes... we find they are not as nice as we thought they'd be. Here's a list of the Worst Roads in the World! 1) Patiopoulo-Perdikaki Road, Greece This is a crazy road that seems like a joke. It has 23,5Km with a 500m elevation, with no signs, lines, markings, traffic lights, also it's full of potholes, curves and traffic... No thanks! 2) Taroko Gorge Road, Taiwan It has everything. The area is full of earthquakes, so the road is breaking all the time and it has landslides. The fact that is extremely narrow doesn't make it easier, it's not uncommon to see cars falling into the abyss. 3) Skippers Canyon Road, New Zealand This is so narrow and difficult to drive in that not even car insurances cover it. If you have to go through it anyway, just pray for not meeting any car coming the opposite way. One of you will have to drive back a long distance. 4) Passage du Gois, France This is a terrible road that gets completely flooded and disappears into the ocean. 4,3 Km of risking your life just because. 5) Luxor-al-Hurghada Road, Egypt Well, let's say, the surroundings of this road are full of... non-desirable people, making it very dangerous. So that, the drivers usually switch off their lights so they cannot see them. But the forget they can't see either and crash all the time. 6) Eyre Highway, Australia Basically, this road is sooo boring that you could pass out. Let me explain, it's a 1675Km long road, completely flat, and straight. There's nothing else, just some wombats, camels and kangaroos. People fall asleep while driving... 7) Zoji la Pass, India This is not a proper road, it's so full of mud that the vehicles often get stuck. Also, it's so narrow that two cars can't drive next to each other. So these 9 km feel like they were 90! 8) Halsema Highway, Philipines Due to its elevation, it suffers severe fogs and rains that provoke mudslides and falling rocks. And that makes very easy that you can have a terrible accident. 9) Tianmen Mountain Road, China This road is so full of curves, that even with protections along the whole 11 Km, and not being so narrow as the one we've already mentioned, it's full of accidents. So, not the best road... 10) Karakoram Highway, China to Pakistan This is like the mixture of all the evils in the world. It's a combination of fog, blizzards, even floodings combined with the non-desirable people we mentioned before and high elevation. One of these will make you suffer for sure.
