VRChat as a game based social platform is definitely an experience to behold and left a profound impression upon me, ever since I started playing a couple of years ago to today. So much so that to this day, I continue to spend an inordinate amount of time there socializing and trying my hand at cinematography with an ongoing film series as well as other VRChat based film projects. All in all, it has a wealth of potential, utilizing the flexible if buggy Unity engine and giving a fair amount of control to content creators knowledgeable enough to utilize the various features embedded in the software. From creating unique avatars to designing the next great level, there’s a wide variety of either to choose from out there. I’ve seen beautifully crafted levels that become popular hang out spots, or levels that contain a game that you can access and enjoy any time you want, provided an update hadn’t killed / broken the level in question.
As far as personal experiences go, I might have a story or two to tell sometime beyond what I covered in this video. What I can say is, VRChat is a fairly dynamic place, relatively fast paced in terms of fads and activities, let alone places people go and frequent. What I can tell you is this: you find a group of people you vibe well with, and stick with them until you either drift apart or become incompatible, and then your group will shift and change. New people will come, old people will go, and the cycle repeats, as it does in real life. There’s always someone new to talk to, and while there will always be times that things will feel a little stagnant, something’ll definitely happen to spice things up and liven the mood.
When you’re ready to make the jump, either because you wanna try out Pavlov or BeatSaber and VRChat is just an added bonus, definitely pick a good headset, because the hardware / platform you opt for will present its own pros and cons and impact your overall experience on VRChat. My recommendation, if you’re worried about price; go with the Oculus Rift S. If you can splurge? Go with something a little better, like the Vive or, dare I say it, the (overpriced) Index.
