Many of our early crops are planted in March and April. We use high tunnels, row covers, and other season extension techniques to get crops to maturity as early as possible. We also show the process of laying black plastic and biodegradable mulch for our warm season crops.
We discuss the three garden tools that are most useful to the new or experienced gardener. If you were limited to only three garden tools you could do most everything you needed to with these three. We also discuss the five main garden tasks and which of these our three garden tools are most useful for. But of course we don't want to be limited to just three garden tools, so we'll look forward to part two where we discuss the tools we don't want to do without!

In this video Chris discusses the 12 crops he recommends growing to produce enough food to feed your family during hard times. He's dubbed these top survival crops "The Dirty Dozen." These crops are recommended primarily for temperate areas similar to USDA zones 4-8 in the Eastern United States, but will still be a good choice for many growing regions. More details and other crops are in his book "The Complete Guide to Survival Gardening" available on Amazon at the link below.

Watch the process as we add our replacement layers to the main flock in the chicken tractor. We clip the primary feathers to keep the chickens from flying out of their protective netting. This brings our layer flock up to about 100 hens, which is about the maximum that can fit in our chicken tractor system. Most of the older hens are Black Stars. The new layers are mix of Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, and Australorps. We have two Welsummer Roosters and two Australorp roosters in the flock as well.

On today's video we'll explain where this concept comes from and how a C.S.A. works. We'll discuss the benefits to the farmer and to the customer, and we'll talk about whether or not a C.S.A. would be right for you. How much does an average C.S.A. cost and what can I expect from my share?
February is the month we see National C.S.A. signup week and National C.S.A. signup day, as many farmers start signing up members this time of year for vegetable and meat shares. We offered our first C.S.A. subscription program around 2008 and we've seen what works and what doesn't. This video is primarily for the prospective C.S.A. member, so if you are interested in starting your own C.S.A. program for your farm, let us know, and we can make that video in the future!

We take a look at the Homesteader's Collection from Sow Right Seeds. This varied collection of 35 seed packs is a great value at about $1 a pack and has a wide range of some pretty good varieties. The complete list of the varieties in the collection is on their website. I had already sown a few packs, so there are a few missing from the video. They are all open-pollinated, have a good amount of seeds per packet, and the ones I have sown so far had excellent germination rates. The larger seeded crops like corn and beans may need to be supplemented with some extra seed, and if you are looking for hybrid or specialty varieties, you may have to look elsewhere, but overall this seed collection is a win! They also have a lot of excellent information on their website in the Planter's Library, so check the link out below.
