Prof. Sam Perry Explains How Publishers Change the Bible (Full Interview)
In this video Professor Samuel Perry and I discuss the big business of Bible translations and how translation teams and publishers can change the Bible in subtle and not-so-subtle ways! We discuss how the ESV changed section headers to make a passage in Ephesians 5 more complementarian. We talk about the crazy world of study Bibles and how they can influence readers towards certain biases. Finally Sam shares his thoughts on what he thinks people should look for in a translation.

Exodus 21 22-23 is often brought up in the modern abortion debate as a biblical "abortion law." It's an instruction about what to do if a man hitd a pregnant woman. Some claim this passage is about the rights of the unborn fetus in Biblical times. Others claim that a foetus was viewed as having less value than the mother. The passage is tricky because it's not clear what it actually means.

Also some people have questioned the accuracy of busting December 25th. Yes early Church (3rd-4th Century) fathers believed Jesus was born on either the 6th of January (Epiphany) or December 25th (Augustine, Hippolytus of Rome). However, their calculation was purely theological and speculative. For example, Hippolytus thought Jesus was conceived on March 25th because that was (for him) the anniversary of the creation of the world. Thus Jesus must have been born exactly 9 months later on December 25th. Augustine and the other fathers used similar logic. It's an interesting thought, but not grounded in reality.
Also the joke about it being cold is based in reality. Many scholars and historians believe that Shepherds, if they were still herding in December (which is debated but unlikely) at the very least would not be out in their fields, where it was cold and rainy but in shelters.

Did Moses write the Torah or Pentateuch? Some people believe Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Leviticus, Deuteronomy). However upon close inspection it becomes clear that the Pentateuch was the work of multiple authors over several centuries, sometimes referred to as the Documentary Hypothesis (Julius Wellhausen).
In this video we will answer the question who actually wrote the torah? Did Moses write the pentateuch? We will explore four reasons why Moses did not write the Pentateuch or Torah.

There are a lot of contradictions in the Bible! Like, a lot. For example, how did Judas die? Did he hang himself (Matthew 27) or fall to his death (Acts 1)? What about the differences in Samuel and Chronicles? And why are some of the genealogies different?
These contradictions are often brought up as a sign of the Bible's unreliability by critical scholars such as Bart Ehrman. But such an approach comes from sometimes unconvincing efforts at harmonization. There are other ways to read these contradictions without trying to force harmonization. In this episode of Contradictions in the Bible we take a look at these examples to show how different perspectives and narrative purposes can lead to differences in the way a story is told.

Noah's Ark in Genesis 6-9 shares striking similarities to ancient Flood stories like Gilgamesh, Atrahasis and the Sumerian Flood Story. Ever since George Smith discovered Tablet XI of the Epic of Gilgamesh at the British Museum in the 1800's we've been able to compare these flood stories and their similarities to the Bible. Why are the stories so similar? Did Noah's Ark steal from these stories?

PLEASE NOTE. This video is for entertainment purposes, and the stories are summarised as they are recorded. All of the narrative tales are from 2nd/3rd hand accounts, legends and folktales and may not be historically accurate.
Scams are not new. The Ancient World may not have had Crypto rug pulls like Dink Doink, or fraudsters on the scale of Sam Bankman-Fried; but prior to 500BCE there were plenty of con artists and scammers who made their mark on ancient literature. From Hegestratos committing Insurance Fraud to Marcus Crassus' land purchase exploits, there was no shortage of people being ripped off in Ancient History.

Hegestratos:
This is recorded in Demosthenes’ speech “Against Zenothemis”
You can find the full text in:
- The World of Athens (1984).
- Demosthenes the Orator (2009)
Some Historians think Demosthenes' account is embellished, and actually Hegestratos died in a bad storm. For this view see: Law and Transaction Costs in the Ancient Economy (2015)
The Dummy Mummy:
This theory can be found in: Brier, B. (2001). Case of the Dummy Mummy. Archaeology, 54(5), 28-29.
Not all Egyptologists agree as to the degree that customers were unaware of contents of the fake mummies.
The Darius and Gaumata episode is recorded in the following ancient sources:
- Behistun inscription: http://mcadams.posc.mu.edu/txt/ah../Persia/Behistun_txt.html
- Histories of Herodotos: http://classics.mit.edu/Herodotus/history.3.iii.html
- Ktesias’ Persika (PDF): http://etd.fcla.edu/UF/UFE0022521/nichols_a.pdf
Please note, while it's an interesting tale, as mentioned in the video, most modern historians believe the episode to be an invention by Darius to justify his seizure of the throne. You can find this argument in:
- Allen, Lindsay (2005), The Persian Empire, London: The British Museum press, p. 42.
- Tom Holland, Persian Fire
- Van De Mieroop, Marc (2006), A History of the Ancient Near East (2nd ed.), Blackwell.
Marcus Licinius Crassus' deeds are recorded in Plutarch's The Life of Crassus. Please note that many websites, and even a historical biography of Crassus record that he put out fires with a fire brigade, and even hint that he started the fires. However, Plutarch's original account (which is the only primary source available) does not mention either of these facts.
