Restoration Project #49 - Loewe-Opta "Bella"
I was hoping to have that project finished by now, but there have been... well... issues. The day job picked up again, and also there have been a few other projects. While waiting for parts, I kept busy with these in an interleaved fashion.
The radio is a Loewe-Opta brand, "Bella" model. It has AM and FM reception (eventually hopefully) and features a rather typical phono input as well. The rectifier is a more modern selenium one, so it's down one tube already.
Originally, I thought I might do just a few capacitor replacements and be done with it, but it did show a bit more "wear and tear" than I expected... so buckle in!

Some more stuff from my late grandfather. As far as I know, he used these bells on his ox cart... back in the 1950s and earlier. I found the three of them in various places, but all were quite ugly: stained, dusty, no handles at all and only one proper clapper. One bell had a rusty nut as a clapper and the third one had nothing.
I did some sandblasting before I started recording these videos, so the first shot is after that step already...
The handles made for a good first project with my woodturning lather (see last video) and my only issue with them is the center hole: it was slightly too deep with two of the handles, so there's now a dimple in the end. Meh. Still, I like how they came out.

The complete set of video intros for the Fursuit Gameshow at Eurofurence 19 in Magdeburg, August 2013. Note that there is a short gap between them.
These videos were played on the video walls as a show intro, game intros and credits sequence for our live stage event. I strung them together to make a single video file rather than uploading and spamming my YT account with 14 individual files.

After I made the last video, Karpour asked me if I could have a look at one of his Windows CE based devices. An HP Jornada 820, where the screen had some LCD column problem. Every 10 or so pixels, one column was semi-dead, but only in the upper half and also only one or two color channels. To me it was clear that either the connection between the glass panel and the driver was faulty, the driver chip had experienced a meltdown or - unlikely but possible - the LCD controller on the mainboard had some damage.
Karpour said, that he already had a replacement screen in a somewhat broken but compatible model that could be swapped out if needed. I agreed to give it a try, but suggested to skip any pixel-addressing fixes and go for the replacement screen right away, since it may damage the screen permanently if I tried something more... invasive.
Doing some research about the Intel StrongARM chip showed that the CPU is also the display controller. So if that was at fault, I couldn't do much. The CPU is a tight BGA chip and I have no intention of reflowing one of those any time soon.
Turned out to be "just" the display, because swapping the one from the broken model worked like a charm from the get go.
The plastic was about as brittle as it can get... some of the threaded inserts just crumbled away. I used epoxy glue to secure as many of the lose parts as possible.
Not shown in the video, but still an issue: The part that was broken in the damaged model is broken in all 820s it seems: There would be room for two screws to hold it in place, but HP decided that "one is enough" and so the entire tension of the hinge is always tugging on that one screw. Eventually the plastic there WILL break, as the hinge has a counter-spring to hold the display open or closed and it doesn't move easy on that side.

As announced, I did one of my pending model kits. A VW Beetle in German police design. Back in the 70s and probably early 80s, police actually did use these. This particular model is 1:24 scale, done by Refell Germany. Lots of details on the engine and inside, some on the suspension. Took about three weeks of spare time to complete.

Most people nowadays think of reel to reel tape recorders as the "oldest" or "original" form of magnetic audio recording. But before the tape technology, there was "wire recording". It is the same basic concept, but uses a thin steel wire as a medium. Because it is so thin, it can only hold so much magnetism. To get usable audio frequencies out of it, the recording speed had to be rather high and the wires would snap... there are officially suggested "knots" on how to splice the wire in such a case.
Devices are still around on e-bay, so I wouldn't consider those to be "collectors items". Since I wanted a usable and decent looking unit, I decided to refurbish it on the outside and replace all the old capacitors on the inside for starters. This turned into quite a project, so here is part two, the mechanical part, and as soon as I have the electronics finished, I'll follow up with the final part!
In this part, I'm cleaning up the mechanical elements: from the motor to the spools. When I was almost done, I also found a service manual online which explained a few quirks. I am well into the electronics too, but still waiting for some spare parts to arrive; hopefully it will be done by next week so I have the third part ready in about two weeks!

A little something I came up with, as a parody around current events... at least right now it's still parody.
I didn't have enough time to finish this so the lighting is not the best I could have done and there's some "close ups" missing that I would have loved.
