The title is a partial first line from the famous poem by Rudyard Kipling. How we can keep our heads about us when all others are losing theirs...selective involvement, nature therapy, emotional/mental self-defense, etc. What many are missing in our current society and can we reconnect with that? MUST we reconnect? NOTE: I am not a therapist! These are my personal views. Take from this what may benefit you and leave the rest. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuZTAwgyExg

Touching on a few miscellaneous things I've heard people speak about over the past few days.
1)Homesteaders are by default preppers
2) What is your calling/purpose in life, especially in the current world?
3) Skills considered outdated or old-fashioned
4) Feminism making women weaker
5) Live in reality, but don't panic

Well, here we go, a project I've wanted to do for years and years, but it's quite a bit of manual labor for me. Hopefully, it will turn out nicely and I'll think it was worth it. As I heave the shovel into sandstone and oak roots, I think of what unlimited cash would mean for us-not palatial houses or fancy cars, but having the luxury of hiring someone else to do this type of stuff FOR us!

My awesome husband has pushed through his chronic back pain and generously completed a DIY drop-in table to fit my Janome 7700 sewing machine. The flush surface will make quilting larger quilts much, much easier with less back, shoulder and neck strain.
The cheapest commercial tables not only are pressboard covered with laminate, but cost $200 plus a $90 acrylic insert to fit your particular machine. This was much more cost effective and looks like furniture; should last many years longer, too.
And I've been making some quilted tote bags lately to change up my fun during our rainy beginning of Fall.

Bailey, a 31 week old Partridge Brahma pullet, was seriously injured by the hormone-charged breeding attempts of two young males. It was a freak thing, rarely are they hurt this badly. Her entire scalp was opened up into a big flap, exposing her skull, but she is on the mend and we are just now beginning to allow her and her sisters together after their absence from each other-we do not want her re-injured as the wound is still a bit delicate.
We used an excellent wound spray that is safe for avian species on her and it sped up the healing process tremendously, Vetericyn. Theracyn is also good, same ingredient, but not as concentrated as Vetericyn. NEVER use any spray not safe for birds, nothing that contains any "caine" pain relievers! Those can be fatal to avians!

The Brahmas are slow-maturing birds, pea-combed and feather legged, and the males will mature out at around 15 lbs. Pictures and videos do not do them justice, they are stunning!
However, young hormonal males can injure their girls, which happened the other day, so Bailey, the only laying pullet so far, is separated in the hospital cage with a lacerated scalp (very deep), the boys are living in a pen without their girls, and the other four Brahma girls are in with four older hens until they begin laying and will willingly allow mating by the boys. Bailey may have to stay by herself for another week or so while she heals. Even then, we may just keep the two males separate and put them together for breeding when we are thinking toward hatching their eggs in a couple of months. Always, it's drama in the chicken yard!
***I am still on the fence about selling Bruno, more on the "not" side at this point. He has perfect conformation for the breed, just a mega-star Brahma boy***

If you cannot take a few minutes to watch a few chick raising videos or to get a book about how to raise chicks or manage chickens and prepare for them ahead of time, DO NOT GET CHICKS! This is not a "buy now, learn later" proposition! There will be no later because you will kill them! So, do your research! And make sure you really want them for the long haul, not just on a whim, people!! Better me be harsh with you than you kill innocent animals with your ignorance!
**when I said the man who culled molting hens was a friend of mine, I meant a friend of mine was in the group where this man told about killing molting hens, thinking they were diseased. I don't know him. I have a habit of not finishing my thought, sorry**

Found an old short clip of my big old Blue Orpington rooster, Suede, fussing with another very fondly remembered rooster, my late Delaware, Isaac. I always talk about Suede, but he passed in 2012, years before I had a YouTube channel.
This clip also shows the custom saddles I made for Suede's big hens with special flank flaps, created with faux leather as the top, batting in the center and cotton fabric next to the back of the hen.

Recipe below description. Three ingredients totaling around $12 make enough laundry soap to last in excess of a year unless you have a large family. For the two of us, it lasted well over a year and a half and this batch made today is our third one so we have used this recipe for probably 3 1/2 years now, maybe longer. We are on septic and our pipes are 26 years old, in case that is something you are wondering. No issues relating to this soap that we are aware of so far. If you are sensitive to scent, note that Zote has a citronella scent!
Recipe:
6 cups Borax
6 cups Super Washing Soda (*not baking soda, though you can add that)
2 full bars of Zote Soap, shredded as finely as you can get it
Zote has a citronella scent so no need to add any scent. It may be worth noting for those who are sensitive!
