Episode 5 In this week’s GREENDESERT OFFGRID episode, we got the windows installed and they look amazing, but we found a few leaks after the first rain. So we gave the windows lots of attention to make sure the water stayed out. Shane used several tactics including stitch welding, he used products like closed cell spray foam on the inside of the containers, caulk all around the windows on the outside and even mastic tape, but we still found small leaks in both containers. Shane had even more ideas to keep the water out but he didn’t have a chance to explore them because he was in a bad accident – totaled his truck and is now dealing with a lifetime of back pain. But he’s okay and is working on putting his life back together. In the meantime we got help from Tom with Thomas Russell to reseal all of the windows… and no more leaks! So Tom and his crew moved onto the next project --- framing the entire container. So in our next episode on January 5th, we can move onto the insulation. We’ve done the research to see which will be the most beneficial… for our containers and the environment. So we got excited for some real progress, that is until the city said we had to stop working and they made the process extremely difficult to get back to work. We are still in Texas, working on Phase 2 of our offgrid shipping container homes. In this episode, we focus on comfort and space. How much do you really need? These container homes are 360 square feet. Many people say, “That’s so small, how do you make it work?” The space feels perfect for my family, made us realize how much we waste. But, I must admit, storage has been one of my concerns. So we solve that problem in this episode: We built a nook that folds up and down, so now I have more counter space for the kitchen, a place for our laptops, an area to sit and stare at the gorgeous views, a place to eat… soooooo many uses. We also built storage under the bed, huge area to keep us organized! Plus, we are officially off the air mattress!!! Our Tuft & Needle bed came in. We got the Mint version and this was a huge deal because I have long-term back injuries from a car accident so I needed something comfortable, with lots of support. Back in my TV days, I remembered interviewing them when they first opened up like a decade ago and I’ve wanted one of their beds since then. It’s literally been about 10 years lol. I finally have the bed. We were so excited and impatient that we started sleeping on it before we had a base and I was still sold. Now I want to replace my bed in Phoenix. It’s comfy, has heat technology so it keeps the bed cool and it has a special foam motion so I can move around all I want without waking up my partner.
