In this video, I discuss how the move to proof of stake is centralizing block production in Ethereum among just a few large regulated validators. The Ethereum community seems shocked and upset about this, but there is nothing that they can do now that the merge has happened. I also discuss the key differences between Bitcoin mining pools and ETH staking pools. When you stake ETH in a staking pool, you give up custody and ultimate control. This is not true for Bitcoin mining pools, because individual miners can leave quickly whenever they want, and there is no custody issue. Even if you are staking your own ETH and not using a staking pool, you are at the mercy of ETH developers to write the withdrawal code, which they seem to be in no rush to do. Ethereum holders have a big dilemma to face: If you don't stake your ETH, your share of the overall pie gets constantly diluted compared to those who do stake. If you do stake, you give up custody of your ETH either to an exchange like Coinbase, a pool like Lido, or you have to leave your private keys online (like a hot wallet) which opens you up to the risk of having your ETH stolen. Finally, we just learned this morning that the SEC considers Ethereum to be under US jurisdiction due to the concentration of nodes in the US.
