Jeff Bezos' Amazon.com has purchased the naming rights to the newly renovated KeyArena in Seattle, but an "unprecedented sports-world twist" will see the venue become known as Climate Pledge Arena rather than using the company’s name. James dives into why this is just the latest in a series of attempts for big corporations like Amazon to use environmental causes and social justice pandering to distract the public from their underlying profit driven motives, just like any other multi-national corporation.

This week on 51/49, James discusses the Olympics, and how America funnels its top talent into convincing you to buy more, spend more, and consume more.
Are the Olympics a showcase of human performance and spirited competition, with the goal of bringing the world closer together, or is it to convince you to spend more on your Visa card, buy a Toyota, and drink another Coke?
Are Google and Facebook platforms of communication, connection, and information, or an advertising machine disguised as technology?
What are the implications of a society that incentivizes talent to take any opportunity to sell you more stuff that you don't need?

USDA recently put out this press release: "Scientists Build a healthy Dietary Pattern Using Ultra-Processed Foods", a study that claims "it is possible to build a healthy diet with 91 percent of the calories coming from ultra processed foods." BUT what they fail to mention is that many researchers in this study work for processed food companies or non-profits funded by big food.

In this segment, James explores the relationship between Donald Trump and American ideals.
Based on my observations, in many ways America, like Trump it just a marketing facade, a tale of two cities, both are brands that exploit our emotions without delivering any real or meaningful value.
Trump—is he really making America great again? Did he actually drain the swamp in DC? How skilled is he actually at making deals. Does he really have a billion dollars?
America--we are the land of the free? But how free are we if we have millions of uninsured citizens with no healthcare, living in poverty.
Trump got elected because he is just a manifestation of a lot of American ideals. In 2016 he was literally promising us everything. More freedom, the best deals, the best healthcare, the best jobs…Who wouldn’t vote for that. In a lot of ways, he embodies the brand we know as America. A brand that is truly aspirational, but one that often overpromises, and under delivers.

James breaks down the one of the biggest issues in facing America, no matter whether Trump or Biden President in 2020--tribalism and hyper-partisanship.
Partisan journalism has made it easier and easier to remain in a comfortable echo chamber, where ideas we agree with are reinforced, and ideas we disagree with are either denigrated or absent altogether. And social media has also made our bubbles even more insular.
If we remain within the comforts of tribalism and continue to fall the for traps that the political elites and the mainstream media have laid for us, arguing about how Democrats are going to turn America into a socialist state, or about how Republican’s are supporting white supremacists, then we are going to be way too busy dealing with these squabbles to notice all the corruption that is happening in plain view.

Personally, I can't think of a public figure, politician or otherwise, who has had as profound an impact on my life and my values as Senator Bernie Sanders.
Ever since he has suspended his campaign, I’ve been wanting to express my gratitude, but with everything that’s going on in the world, COVID, police murder, rioting, I thought now would be a good time to appreciate the good things, no matter how fleeting they might be, and take a moment out of my day to say thank you to Bernie.
