When recording outside of a studio it's much more difficult to get clean audio than it is when recording inside a studio. The world is a noisy place and while many sounds can be controlled and shut down, there may be others that you have to live with. Loud sound sources (like traffic) that the Director wants in the shot or a pretty fountain in front of where you're podcasting from may make it difficult to get clean dialogue since you can't shut it off but there are things you can do to reduce that background noise in your audio tracks. In this video, I'll share with you a key technique you can use to do just that.
Note: If there are loud sound sources above talent, under micing may not be the best option as that could pick up more undesired sounds than you'd be baffling out.
Most internet game streamers concentrate so much on their gaming computer specifications that they miss the single important thing... themselves! In this video we go into why sound should be a priority.

I'm also going to be giving away some socks from Darn Tough. Darn Tough socks have quite literally changed the game with regards to the foot discomfort I feel on set and I'll be giving away some men's and women's socks.

I'm in need of someone to standby to record the Epic Live stream if it goes over 12 hours. That way I can have it available after the stream. Unfortunately YouTube doesn't archive over 12 hours and if I record it on my computer it won't be the same or have the same layout. If you're willing to help me out, email me at Allen@SoundSpeeds.us and tell me what you can do and what your rates would be to do this.

Welcome to the seventh episode of the Speed Bumps Podcast. In this episode I was asked about low self noise shotgun mics but I felt the question should have been answered by discussing troubleshooting the signal path to see if the mic was higher noise that normal. I've addressed good sound vs natural sound before but usually in a livestream. In this video I tackle that topic head on.
Production notes:
You'll notice the camera looking god awful. This was my attempt at using a camera with excellent color night vision because I drove home late at night. I know it looks bad; embrace the suck and how hilarious it looks. This is the first of a few videos where I test this camera. Stay with me and tell me how bad it really bothers you. As for the sound, this is the second week in a row I'm trying 50% on Clarity VX Pro. I received no feedback last week.

Welcome to the eighteenth episode of the Speed Bumps Podcast. As with previous episodes we're going to discuss two topics in this video. This first is related to laving up talent. There are many ways to do it and I'm somewhat old school in my philosophy but it's peppered with modern day techniques as well. The second topic we'll discuss is how to break into sound for motion pictures. Is there an easy path or is it a difficult process? Let's talk about it!

As a professional boom operator that works in the film industry (here's my IMDB if you want to fact check me: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1147441), I have used boom poles for 12+ hours a day on set for over 2 decades. I've bonded with boom poles, taught others how to use boom poles, tricked out boom poles and even helped manufacturers improve their boom poles so if there's one thing you can trust me on... it's boom poles.
As one of the cheapest boom poles on the market, the Neewer NW-088 isn't expected to be a quality match for a boom pole over 10 times the price but you'd expect it to be pretty decent for $60. Perhaps capable of helping you acquire good sound at the very least, right? In this video I take a deep dive and thoroughly examine the Neewer NW-088 Boom Pole.

It's very rare that I'll review products such as this, a 100% analog microphone preamp. The reason I chose to review this product? Because it boasts 75dB of clean gain.
Many podcasters and home recordists find themselves purchasing inexpensive one stop shops for all of their sound needs not realizing that the quality will be fair at best. Noisy preamps are the number one complaints you see online with consumers that have purchased discount audio gear. This is because the preamplifiers that increase the microphone audio signal are subpar and can't gain up a microphone without a lot of noise.
Although the preamps aren't great in discount audio interfaces and recorders, the line level input is usually much quieter because there's not much gain involved once audio gets to line level. Microphone audio levels are very low - sometimes as low as 1mV while line level is 1000X higher than that. It takes far less expensive components to pass thru a one volt signal than amplify a 1 millivolt signal.
The Rodyweil R003 analog microphone preamp could serve a high quality bridge between microphone and interface allowing you to bypass the low quality preamp in your interface and going in directly line level. The question is... is the R003 any good? In this video we're going to test it.

Full Disclosure:
Rodyweil did send me the R003 analog microphone preamp in exchange for a fair and honest review. I do get to keep it following this review but I'm not going to allow that to affect my opinion so you can expect this to be a fair and honest review. Rodyweil did not see this video before it was released nor did they have any input in the creation of this video.
