La Palma, Spain / Spanien / España Footage from Friday night shows the partial collapse of the main cone of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma. The collapse triggered a new lava flow that in a matter of minutes engulfed the northern slope of the cone. The Canary Islands Vulcanological Institute stated on twitter that the new lava flow is generating "tremendous destruction in its path" and making it difficult for its teams to navigate the area. Officers could be seen detaining a man outside the home of the Swiss government, the Federal Palace of Switzerland. Protesters banged drums and chanted as they walked through the streets during the unauthorised demo, at one point marching through the city's main train station. On September 23, a similar protest against COVID-19 rules was met with water cannons and rubber bullets, after demonstrators set off fireworks and threw things at police. The Swiss government made possession of proof of vaccination, recovery, or recent COVID-19 test, mandatory to access indoor areas of restaurants, bars, and many other venues, on September 13. Switzerland's Federal Council justified the requirement in a statement on September 8, saying that it was intended to "prevent hospitals from being overstretched." The statement warned as well that too high a proportion of the population remained unvaccinated "to prevent another strong wave of infection." Footage shows police firing tear gas in an attempt to disperse the demonstrators, who were seen marching through the city centre in large numbers. Rubbish bins were overturned and public property, including a bus stop and a billboard, was destroyed during the unrest.
