A.C. Crema 1908 (Serie D) u12 possession | passing | receiving | defending | decision making
A simple but excellent exercise for teaching young players about spacing, supporting the play, movement off the ball and creating passing lanes. Decision making is also a factor.
The grid is 6 yds by 6yds and there are 3 attackers and one defender. The concept is simple: the two attackers without the ball work quickly to make sure the player with the ball has two receivers: one to his left and one to his right. Diagonal passes are not permitted (although, yes, one does happen here).
If the defender wins the ball he changes places with the attacker who lost it.

3 players, each with a ball. 3 cones spread out about 7 or 8 yards from each other. At the trainers signal. The player dribbles around the first cone, with a move directed by the trainer, dribbles past the second cone with a different move, also directed by the trainer, accelerates past the third cone before turning quickly, ready to go again.

Simple but good. The players dribble at a steady pace and on the coaches command they perform a quick change of direction and change of pace. Here, the players use the sole of foot to change direction and the use the outside of the same foot accelerate in to new space.
I like that the trainer has all the players doing the same move. When I do a change of direction/change of pace exercise like this I typically give the players the freedom to come up with there own moves, and I feel there is value in that but by sometimes being specific may get some players out of their comfort zone and learn/use a move they might be as comfortable with.

Everything about this training exercise is fantastic. First and foremost, it is a finishing exercise which, come on, to be honest, all players love. Second, it is a competition which almost always raises the enjoyment/intensity level of just about any exercise.
The finisher starts at the 18. They begin by initiating an angled run from the 18 towards the midfield line. There are 6 cones (markers) positioned from the 18 yard line. As the finisher approaches the midfield line a pass is played between the 5th and 6th cones (markers). When the finisher receives the ball he turns, as quickly as possible, and attempts score on the small goal before his opponent on the other side of the field.
There are so many aspects that makes this such a great training exercise. First, the pass has to be almost perfect for the finisher to get off a quality shot. Second, the first touch of the finisher has to be close to prefect to give him the best chance of scoring on a small goal before his opponent. Lastly, the finisher has to, very quickly, take a good look at the goal in order take the best shot possible.
