Taiwan at a Tipping Point: The Democratic Progressive Partys Return to Power
Author: John F. Copper File Type: pdf Taiwan at a Tipping Point assesses issues relating to Taiwans new political, economic, diplomatic and militarystrategic state-of-affairs following the January 2016 national election that brought the then opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to power. This was a momentous event. The DPP won major presidential and legislative victories giving it an easy mandate to govern. Tsai Ing-wen became president. But ruling did not turn out to be easy. Tsai and the DPP had little experience managing the economy and their growth strategies did not work well. Their stances on Taiwans independence alienated Taiwans biggest trading partner and a nation that claims Taiwan is its territory, China. Beijing took revenge. Taiwans only ally, the United States, was confused and distracted in trying to formulate a new policy toward Taiwan. Promises President Tsai and the DPP made during the campaign, especially on reform and Taiwans national status, were hard to fulfill and for the most part were not. Post-election euphoria turned into dismay. Thus the question arose whether the president and the DPP would remain in power or whether the next elections would see the Nationalist Party or Kuomintang (KMT) returnthough it remaining in the doldrums made this seem unlikely. Thus uncertainty characterized Taiwan post-election. Taiwan was at a turning point. **Review Taiwan at a Tipping Point is a very timely book, given the political, economic, and diplomatic uncertainties facing that country. John F. Copper presents a sophisticated analysis of recent economic trends and domestic politics in Taiwan, and of the roles that China and the United States are playing in the evolving situation. This study will be valuable to those interested in Taiwan, China, and US diplomacy. In his new book, John F. Copper seeks to help readers make sense of the stunning electoral victory of the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party in the islands 2016 elections. Having never been concerned with being politically correct, Coppers conclusions provide us with a sobering and objective assessment of the Tsai administrations uneven performance and the many challenges that the people of Taiwan must now confront. As such, the book should have a broad appeal to both practitioners and serious academics (Dennis V. Hickey, Missouri State University) John F. Copper, a world recognized expert on Taiwan, has written a definitive study of political change in Taiwan since 2014. If one wants to acquire background and incisive, balanced political analysis of contemporary Taiwan, this is the book to read. This excellent study is complemented by a superb writing style. Although ostensibly presented as light entertainment, the work of writer-director-producer Joss Whedon takes much dark inspiration from the horror genre to create a unique aesthetic and perform a cultural critique. Featuring monsters, the undead, as well as drawing upon folklore and fairy tales, his many productions both celebrate and masterfully repurpose the traditions of horror for their own means. Woofter and Jowetts collection looks at how Whedon revisits existing feminist tropes in the 70s and 80s slasher craze via Buffy the Vampire Slayer to create a feminist saga the innovative use of silent cinema tropes to produce a new fear-laden, film-television intertext postmodernist reflexivity in Cabin in the Woods as well as exploring new concepts on cosmic dread and the sublime for a richer understanding of programmes Dollhouse and Firefly. Chapters provide the historical context of horror as well as the particular production backgrounds that by turns support, constrain or transform this mode of filmmaking. Informed by a wide range of theory from within philosophy, film studies, queer studies, psychoanalysis, feminism and other fields, the expert contributions to this volume prove the enduring relevance of Whedons genre-based universe to the study of film, television, popular culture and beyond.**About the AuthorKristopher Karl Woofter teaches on the American Gothic, horror and the Weird tradition in literature, cinema and television at Dawson College, Canada. This volume examines historical and contemporary engagements of anarchism and literary production. Anarchists have used literary production to express opposition to values and relations characterizing advanced capitalist (and socialist) societies while also expressing key aspects of the alternative values and institutions proposed within anarchism. Among favoured themes are anarchist critiques of corporatization, prisons and patriarchal relations as well as explorations of developing anarchist perspectives on revolution, ecology, polysexuality and mutual aid. A key component of anarchist perspectives is the belief that means and ends must correspond. Thus in anarchist literature as in anarchist politics, a radical approach to form is as important as content. Anarchist literature joins other critical approaches to creative production in attempting to break down divisions between readers and writer, audience and artist, encouraging all to become active participants in the creative process. Dr Shantz teaches at the Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Vancouver, BC. **

Mies van der Rohe A Critical Biography is a major rewriting and expansion of Franz Schulzes acclaimed 1985 biography, the first full treatment of the master German-American modern architect. Coauthored with architect Edward Windhorst, this revised edition, three times the length of the original text, features extensive new research and commentary and draws on the best recent work of American and German scholars. The authors major new discoveries include the massive transcript of the early-1950s Farnsworth House court case, which discloses for the first time the facts about Miess epic battle with his client Edith Farnsworth. Giving voice to dozens of architects who knew and worked with (and sometimes against) Mies, this comprehensive biography tells the compelling story of how Mies and his students and followers created some of the most significant buildings of the twentieth century. From Library JournalA biography of the man and his ideas, with secondary emphasis on the build ings. Schulze (Art, Lake Forest Col lege) has had the full cooperation of the Mies Archives at the Museum of Mod ern Art and has done extensive re search and interviews with Miess con temporaries, students, and intimates. The picture of Mies which emerges is honest and detailed, fair and balanced. Coupled with David Spaeths Mies van der Rohe ( LJ 5185), which is more de tailed on Miess architecture, Schulzes book gives a picture in the round. It is well written and flows smoothly, with particularly good attention to Miess youth in Aachen and the background of Weimar culture. Occasionally one misses illustrations which the narrative implies, but this is still an excellent book. Recommended. Jack Perry Brown, Art Inst. of Chicago Libs. 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc. ReviewFranz Schulzes 1985 biography of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe has always been acknowledged as the most comprehensive and thoughtful biography of one of the key figures in twentieth-century architecture. This revised edition with significant new scholarship by its two authors will undoubtedly come to occupy the same position.(Dietrich Neumann, Brown University) A herculean, generally successful effort to present Miess work in terms of both character and context. . . .This book has obviously been a long labor of love and respect for which no source has been left untouched.(Ada Louise Huxtable, on the previous edition) [A] distinguished and eloquent biography.(Paul Goldberger, on the previous edition) The most comprehensive book ever written about the master designer and, by any measure, the best. . . . Because no writer has ever before probed into Miess life at such depth, we have here the first definitive reconstruction of the architects personal habits, loves, fears, triumphs, loneliness and (in his old age) agonies.(Paul Gabb, on the previous edition Chicago Tribune) This excellent revised edition of a work originally published in 1985, has 138 illustrations, incisive descriptions of Mies innovative creations and a fascinating account of his Pyrrhic victory in a lawsuit against his disaffected client Edith Farnsworth.(Booklist, Starred Review) One recent book, however, has been largely overlooked by reviewers, perhaps because it appears to be merely a revised edition of a volume that Mies lovers already have on their bookshelves. Other than the title, though, the book is a completely different animal. . . . Fresh research into Miess American commissions, among them the troubled history of his most alluring American residential worka transparent glass house for the eminent nephrologist Dr. Edith Farnsworthhas resulted in an almost entirely new book.(Architectural Digest)
