Thank you for joining us for today’s livestream where we talked about what you should do if you’re struggling with mid-back pain. We’re going to be explaining some common causes of back pain here, what imaging can tell us about the pain and when there might be a cause for deeper concern.
Mid-back pain can occur a little higher up than the lumbar spine typically causes problems. At the junction between your thoracic and lumbar spine, you’re probably likely to see problems if you have some postural issues.
One of the common postural imbalances that can cause a problem is a sway back posture. Commonly it’s pregnant ladies that struggle with this as they have a growing tummy and need to counterbalance themselves. Mannequins in fashion stores also typically have the women with the hips forward and neck down, this is not so great for influencing good posture on younger people.
A typical posture as well is where the spine is rounded over either when standing or when sitting. Over time, this type of posture can cause the vertebra to actually change shape into wedges rather than their typical shape. In an image performed lying down, you’re likely to not see the problem besides the wedging if the problem has been ongoing long enough. In an upright image, you’ll actually see what the spine is doing when it’s load bearing.
The Back In Shape membership area can be helpful in resetting the posture.
The questions we answered today were:
Can mid-back pain also come from the neck?
Yes, slightly above the bra strap you’re likely to see this aching if you have the problem coming from the neck.
When doing the strengthening exercises I find it better to lift a little bit lighter than heavier. Is this because the weaker smaller muscles are able to be worked more instead of the big muscles taking over?
All too often people reach for the larger weights and do lower reps, activating the right muscles is so important. If you’re not able to feel them activating without weight, then you have no business using a w

How To Use A Massage Gun For Back Pain
Read more: https://backinshapeprogram.com/2022/03/how-to-use-a-massage-gun-for-back-pain/
Massage guns can be used to help your back pain in three main ways. In this post and video, we'll be covering how you can use this tool to improve your back pain, as well as enhance the rehabilitation process.
Having used these personally and for years in clinical practice, we know that the use of good quality massage and vibration guns can be great for soft tissue therapy. With back pain, there is always going to be a degree of muscle involvement, whether it is local to the back, or muscle spasm in the hips and legs.
Firstly, we can use the massage gun on the soft tissues of your lower back, taking care to avoid the spine and other bony prominences such as the rips and pelvis. Here the vibration can provide an element of soothing relief. The important thing to note here is that the gun is not fixing your back pain, and certainly not the cause of the problem with your back. But used both in the back or over soft tissues in the legs which are painful, it can provide some moment to moment relief.
It's important to highlight the point that this is not fixing back pain but helping with some symptomatic relief in a safe way, whilst you work on more effective rehabilitation protocols to strengthen the region and eliminate bad habits that are perpetuating the problem in the lower back.
Be careful when using the vibration or massage gun in this manner that you do not over-do it!
The second way in which these massage guns can help you with your back pain is to enhance the strengthening process. Working with the massage gun to improve muscle tissue quality in the limbs, hips and lower back is a simple way to improve tissue circulation and breakdown of any fibrotic scar tissue in the muscles. It also helps with the removal of waste products from the muscles. If you're doing the right sort of rehabilitation work, strengthening the muscle tissues, the employment of some effective soft tissue treatment like this can really help. It's also much more economical than having daily treatments from a professional - not taking anything away from the benefit these professional services can have.
Ultimately, it's about enhancing the strengthening process, and helping those muscles go through the adaptive growth at a faster rate, which has a positive effect on your lower back.
Finally, you can make use of massage or vibration guns to improve your flexibility and make stretching more effective, combining the vibration gun with a stretch can make some noticeable change almost instantly. As flexibility work becomes relevant later on in your rehabilitation process you can employ this tool to enhance your results.

Where can you get vitamin D?
You can get vitamin D from three places. Food: although it’s not hugely abundant and generally you don’t eat the foods everyday that contain vitamin D. Supplementation and Sunlight. When sunlight hits your skin, a chemical reaction happens to create vitamin D3. That vitamin D is then either stored by your body in fat or is utilised in the body for different processes.
What can prevent you getting enough vitamin D?
If you’re taking supplements, taking it with fat is important. If you’re also taking a fish oil supplement, do try to take it with that. If you’ve got inflammatory bowel conditions you also may not absorb the vitamin D optimally, so you may also want to try to get additional vitamin D through sunlight as well. Corticosteroids can also negatively influence your ability to absorb vitamin D, as well as medications used to control your cholesterol. If this is you, ask if this medication is going to affect you and ask if your levels can be tested. Most blood tests actually indicate that most of us are deficient.
If you’re in a conservatory or you’re wearing sunscreen, this may inhibit your ability to absorb enough vitamin D. The research here is patchy because there are arguments that we generally don’t apply enough sunscreen or we leave uncovered patches. Also, don’t use this as an excuse to not use sunscreen. Just 15-30 minutes is enough to absorb enough. Increased melanin in the skin can prevent you absorbing enough, as is living in areas further north.
What does it do?
If you’re taking a calcium supplement, taking vitamin D with it if it doesn’t already contain a vitamin D in the supplement is important. This might be recommended to you if you have osteoporosis or osteopenia. Doing exercises with more impact and load-bearing are going to help you build bone density.
Vitamin D gets converted into a hormone and affects about 5% of your gene processes. That’s a huge amount, so getting enough is vital. Cell growth, proliferation and apoptosis (the breaking down of ‘zombie’ broken cells. White blood cells recycle those cells to produce new and efficient cells. This and cell proliferation work hand in hand. Muscle function is also impacted by vitamin D, as is immune function and reducing inflammation. Around 6
