I've decided to start a second channel which is more of a Vlog. The content will be more 'raw' and less refined than what I upload to the main 'Oz in Pictures' Channel. This makes them more suitable to being edited and uploaded on the go when I'm out and about. I intend to do them on lots of different things. Of particular interest may be different activities that I enjoy or am trying for the first time. Or places that I visit and think others might be interested in. I might do them anywhere but in the coming years I expect to focus particularly on things in my home state of South Australia which I think is a wonderful place to live. So, at times it might seem a bit like a travel Vlog. However, I'm not putting any hard and fast rules in place for this Vlog so anything that comes to mind could well go up on this channel when I want to have a bit of a chat to anyone who wants to listen. You can effectively be my bartender (if you are familiar with the analogy)!
This has come about at a time where many people are struggling with a rather full emotional bucket due to all the stress people have gone through in recent times. Hopefully I can encourage people to get out and about and do positive things to bring back some enjoyment to their lives. Appropriately this first episode focuses on the concept of 'Emotional Bucket' and how we keep it from overflowing (and even empty it a bit) by some of the activities we do?

I recently got my personalised Xkarts sticker kit that was made for me by Brett and his team at Screen FX in Alberton. It's based on the colors on the signage and shirts at Xkarts and Leisure in Gawler, who have been supporting me in my return to Go Karting. I've always liked the colours. Predominantly black with the name in blue (with just a touch of white) and we did something subtle with the black for the sticker kit that I thought made it look interesting whilst keeping it simple in the same way that the memorable F1 liveries of the 80's were really effective. I think it's a great sticker kit. The only thing I may do different next time Is adding something to the front and the petrol tank.
I've never put one of these on before and there's a bit of an art to it. I thought we did a reasonable job for the first attempt and hopefully we will improve with updated sticker kits (in which I plan on tweaking the design) in the future.

I have a few updates that I wanted to talk about so thought it would be time for another video. Some are sort of loose ends from activities I've talked about, whilst others are new to the vlog. Either way I thought I would discuss them over a glass of wine and whilst I was reviewing it (over more wine) I thought this was kind of a cool format for a relaxed chat where you guys can be my bartender and I can raise all kinds of subjects. So, I thought I might try this again as various subjects come up that I feel like discussing. Feel free to pour yourself a glass of wine (or whatever your guilty pleasure is) and hang out for a bit.

In this video we are 'Keeping it Real' whilst cycling in circles! Cycling on a velodrome is a relatively new thing to me. If I'm to be perfectly honest, the thing that first attracted me to it is that I thought it would be the closest thing to going around a motor racing oval on a bike! A the time I wasn't riding much but going down to the Friday 'come and try' nights at the Adelaide Superdrome became a regular thing for me a few years ago. I came to enjoy it so much that it was actually this that prompted me to get a proper road bike and cycle more often. Unfortunately, then came all the restrictions in 2020 and I focused more on riding my road bike out on the road away from all of that.

In this Vlog I'm going all Virtual on you and 'keeping it real' in the world of Zwift!
I won't lie, for someone who has spent their whole life being active, the last 12 months it's been less than healthy. Poor drinking and eating habits and exercise that I would describe as token at best. In the last 2 weeks I've started trying to get my act together again and riding on my Smart Trainer on Zwift used to be a big part of that and I'm trying to make it that way again.
What is Zwift? Well, this video is a bit of an introduction into it. It is essentially an app for cyclists and runners. But it's more than that. It's a fully immersive experience in a virtual world while you're doing it. That could mean just going for a casual ride, undertaking any number of solo challenges, taking part in exercise sessions, racing others or doing time trials against the clock. There are so many options. You just put your bike on your smart trainer and transport yourself to virtual environments such as the island of Watopia (the fictional island I used in this video) or recreations of places like New York or London (both with a fair bit of fictitious stuff thrown in mind you).
To be clear, I don't advocate replacing your outdoors riding with Zwift. Not at all. It is definitely preferable to ride in the real world, but when weather or circumstances make it difficult, the convenience of Zwift is a good alternative to stay fit so you can enjoy your outdoors cycling (or running) more when you can do it.
There is also some footage of me struggling on a real hill in South Australia on zero training! I can't say I enjoyed that but you can have a laugh at my expense.
If you like this video let and want to see me punishing myself more on a bike (indoors or outdoors) on the Vlog, let me know.

Cycling is one of those activities that you can literally do from your front door with little fluffing around. There are a number of local rides I do that don't involve having to load my bike on to my car. This is a local block in an industrial area that feels safe even when it gets dark. Thought I would take you for a lap of it.

In this Vlog we are 'keeping it real' doing a local hike that takes us off the normal paths.
As you know, I've recently found myself getting back into a bit of indoor rock climbing as I've been introducing someone to the sport (it may suit her more than me). The next logical step is to take it outdoors but in order to be able to do that we have to go through a process of learning about the local climbing areas and how to set up anchor systems for top roping. I will deal with the later in a later video but as to the former, there are a number of good places to climb in South Australia but the most well-known are the various crags within Morialta Conservation Park and out of those Far Crag is probably the most used.
I've hiked in Morialta a lot over the years and there are two other things on the channel on it. However, most people walk past the climbing areas without even giving them a second thought. All they know is that there are rocky outcrops within the park. In this video I hike specifically with the intention of finding the fastest way to Far Crag from within the park (most climbers access it from Norton Summit Road above the park).

For the last video in this series we visit Dreamworld which we found to be in the process of a major upgrade. The following day for the last theme park on this trip we visited WhiteWater World (another water park). Following my enjoyment of riding the Giant Drop at Dreamworld 11 times I started seriously considering the idea of taking up skydiving and whilst I didn't plan to do that on this trip, I found they have an indoor skydiving simulater called iFly so we went there and gave that a go. We spent our last evening on the Gold Coast on this trip enjoying the sunset from the observation deck at SkyPoint.
We had a really good time during this trip. It was planned at very short notice and yet we felt we crammed as much action into that time as we could so if you're looking for a short gettaway that is full of excitement within Australia, it's hard to go past the Gold Coast. Hope you enjoyed sharing some of the highlights of our trip with us.
