THE VIRGINIA TRIPLE CROWN 13:05 - McAfee Knob 21:15 - Tinker Cliffs 1:08:00 - Dragon's Tooth I checked the weather for the week of October 17 and decided October 21-24 would be the best days to do the Virginia Triple Crown hike. I also decided that I did not want to rush through it but enjoy my time out there; so I made it a four-day, three-night challenge and adventure! I knew it wasn't going to be easy, but I was determined to stay positive and make it fun. And, I did. I started my challenge off at the McAfee Knob Trailhead. I had planned on hiking 10-11 miles that day where I would see the first two 'crowns' McAfee Knob and Tinker Cliffs. Here is my itinerary: ? Day 1: Oct 21 - Hike to McAfee Knob and then to Tinker Cliffs. Camp at the Lambert Meadows Shelter. DETAIL: From the McAfee Knob Trailhead, cross the road (311) and go up the steps, and head north on the AT. In about 4 miles you will come to McAfee Knob. Continue north on the AT for about 5 miles and you will reach Tinker Cliffs. (Tinker Cliffs was my favorite of the three) Continue on the AT for about 1.5 miles to Lambert Meadows Shelter to camp. There is a stream there and you can filter water. ? Day 2: Oct 22 - From Lambert Meadows Shelter, backtrack south on the AT to Andy Layne Trail. Follow the Andy Layne Trail until you get to 311 (there will a parking lot at the end of it). Look directly across the street (311) and you will see a burgundy blaze on a tree. Go there. From there, follow the Catawba Valley Trail (a dark blue blaze) about 2.5 miles to the North Mountain Trail (a yellow-blazed trail). While the Catawba Valley Trail is beautiful, it is tough and has many steep switchbacks going up. Along the way on Catawba, you will come to a beautiful stream under a bridge (The Catawba Creek). GET YOUR WATER HERE! You will be soon approaching the North Mountain Trail and there is no water up there. I drank a liter of water and then filtered up two 700ml Smart Water Bottles that would hopefully get me across the 13-mile North Mountain Trail. It was a cool and breezy day and not hot at all. I was careful to conserve my water. You will see a sign and blaze (yellow) that connects you from the Catawba Valley Trail to the North Mountain Trail. Go left. (You should have plenty of water on you at this point). I hiked about 4 miles on the North Mountain Trail and found a suitable campsite and set up camp. (There are no shelters up there). ? Day 3: Oct 23 - Continue hiking down the North Mountain Trail until you get to 311 again. Continue straight on the right side of the road and you will see a green road sign reading "North 311, New Castle 10, Crows 42, White Sulphur SPGS 54."
