Slasher films are the modern, American version of Gialli. The influence is clear. You’ve got hyper-violence and gore, nudity, and at times a mysterious killer stalking around. Yes, the two subgenres can differ greatly in some areas, but there’s no doubt Giallo films inspired slashers. So it’s funny to think that slashers tend to be so formulaic, especially during the slasher heyday in the early 80s. Gialli on the other hand tend to be more unique and original.
Sure you have your typical murder mysteries, but not every Giallo has to have hyperviolence or a masked killer. Some are just really interesting and unique stories, like tonight’s film, 1971’s Short Night of Glass Dolls

If you like slasher films but don’t know about Giallo films, then you are missing out. Starting in the 1960s, Gialli started taking over Italian horror cinema. They share many of the same elements of Slashers, like the hyper-violence, gore, babes, and a killer, but they came out decades before we ever got Jason and Freddy. In Gialli, the identity of the killer tends to be a mystery until the very end. Gialli tend to be a bit more erotic, artful, and mysterious. And to think Giallo came from yellow books.

Who doesn’t love a good summertime carnival? From the rides to the attractions to the food, carnivals are magical, especially for kids. One day, the carnival suddenly arrives, and just as quick as they come, they disappear. There’s so much mystery surrounding them and is a great premise to base a horror movie on. Tobe Hooper directs this wonderfully familiar yet oddly unique slasher that has one of the most visually interesting slasher villains ever.

The Dark and The Wicked was written and directed by established horror veteran Bryan Bertino. Bertino’s name should ring a bell as he was the writer and director of the classic 2008’s The Strangers. Bryan Bertino has directed only 4 movies all of which he also wrote and his two highest-rated films on IMDB are The Strangers and The Dark and the Wicked, both sitting at a 6.1. So let’s check out The Dark and the Wicked and see if it’s worth your time.

Even though Paperhouse is often listed as a horror film, it has no intention of being one. At no stage during writing, production or marketing was Paperhouse ever supposed to be considered a horror film, but here we are… It’s mistakenly talked about as if it were a horror film and has been for years. Look at some of these reviews. Not everyone got the memo that this isn’t a horror film, so why do some people claim it as such? Well, it does have some of the most frightening scenes I’ve seen and possibly one of the best jump scares I’ve ever seen rivaled only by the Exorcist 3. I’m excited to introduce some of you to this frightening children’s fantasy film.
Paperhouse is a solely unique film from the UK. It’s not tied to any genre but instead exists in a fever dream. You have elements of dark fantasy, a coming-of-age story, drama, a bit of young romance, and horror. The film’s plot is cemented in dreams and that explains why the film is a mix of everything. Just like a dream, it has many different emotions attached to a wild, almost nonlinear story.
