Janna Levin is the Claire Tow Professor of Physics & Astronomy at Barnard College. She earned a PhD in theoretical physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1993, and a Bachelor of Science in astronomy and physics with a concentration in philosophy at Barnard College in 1988, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa. Much of her work deals with looking for evidence to support the proposal that our universe might be finite in size due to its having a nontrivial topology. Other work includes black holes and chaos theory. She joined the faculty at Barnard College in January 2004 and is currently the recipient Tow Professor grant.
She is also the Chair and Director of Sciences, Pioneer Works!

Did scientists recently detect evidence for an Anti-Universe, one where time flows backwards? Or is it an overreach into unsupportable hype? I explore the data that led scientists to make claims about ghostly neutrinos that are their own anti-particles. How do scientists interpret data like these and how do physicists reveal the hidden symmetries of nature?
Stange signals were seen in recent years by a NASA-funded radio telescope flown aloft over Antarctica by a giant helium filled balloon. The device, called the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA), detects radio signals produced when high-energy particles coming from cosmic sources smash into earth’s atmosphere. Some radio signals waves skim the Earth before being detected by ANITA, and others reflect off the ice. ANITA can tell the difference and some claim their odd behavior are indicative of signals traveling backwards in time. Or are there other interpretatisn? Found out in this video!
Technical write up https://arxiv.org/pdf/1603.05218.pdf
Characteristics of Four Upward-pointing Cosmic-ray-like Events Observed with ANITA
We report on four radio-detected cosmic-ray (CR) or CR-like events observed with the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA), a NASA-sponsored long-duration balloon payload. Two of the four were pre- viously identified as stratospheric CR air showers during the ANITA-I flight. A third stratospheric CR was detected during the ANITA-II flight. Here we report on characteristics these three unusual CR events, which develop nearly horizontally, 20-30 km above the surface of the Earth. In addition, we report on a fourth steeply upward-pointing ANITA-I CR-like radio event which has characteristics consistent with a primary that emerged from the surface of the ice. This suggests a possible τ-lepton decay as the origin of this event, but such an interpretation would require significant suppression of the Standard Model τ-neutrino cross section.

#neutrinos #cosmology #WomenInSTEM Dr. Vavagiakis is a postdoctoral associate in the Physics Department at Cornell University. She works on four collaborations: ACT, CCAT-prime, CMB-S4, and the Simons Observatory. She is a fierce advocate for inclusion, diversity and Women in STEM.
Eve got her PhD at Cornell University in 2021, where she was an NSF Graduate Research Fellow and Provost Diversity Fellow on instrumentation and analysis for cosmology and astrophysics.
She designed Mod-Cam, a first light instrument for the CCAT Observatory‘s Fred Young Submillimeter Telescope (FYST). And is currently leading the development of Mod-Cam for first light on the FYST, located at 5600 meter elevation in the Atacama Desert, Chile.
In addition to building instrumentation, Dr. Vavagiakis analyzes maps of the cosmic microwave background to measure thermal and kinetic Sunyaev–Zel’dovich signals. These measurements probe the contents and evolution of galaxy groups and clusters and will constrain the fundamental physics of our universe.
Eve is an enthusiastic science communicator to a diverse public audience, and authoring children’s books with MIT Kids Press which will highlight modern physics and astronomy experiments. The first book is “I’m a Neutrino,” available on Amazon.
“I’m a Neutrino” is an accessible and visually arresting picture book about one of the universe's most mysterious particles for the youngest scientific minds.

Previously on Thirty Minute Thesis I've explored alternatives to string theory, such as Loop Quantum Gravity. But I realized I hadn't yet explored the basics of string theory itself. So in today's video I ask: "What would It take for String Theory to move beyond the realm of pure math, Into verifiable territory"? Is the fact that many 'discoveries' in string theory revolve around the math of theory itself or already disproven facts about our universe -- such as the fact that AdS/CFT correspondence relies on a negative cosmological constant, in contrast to the observed positive cosmological constant -- already fatal to this once-most-promising of all theories? Or could it be salvaged and, if so, how? Do we need new predictions, or would even a retrodiction suffice?
This episode of Thirty Minute Thesis explores the experimental minimum -- the very basics that any purported theory of everything should aspire to achieve. We discuss the basics of the theory as delightfully explicated by Ed Witten in Physics Today and compare it to other approaches, such as Loop Quantum Gravity and more.
Welcome to another episode of Thirty Minute Thesis -- a solo deep-dive into a fascinating topic in cosmology, physics, or science itself. Today's video explains what String Theory must do in order to prevail as a candidate Theory of Everything.

Was 2020 really the "worst year ever," as some would have us believe? Or are things getting better? Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker has shown that poverty, pollution and other challenges are on the wane and we're doing better now in every one of a host of important metrics compared with 30 years ago. Yet progress isn't inevitable, and it doesn't mean everything gets better for all humans all the time, Pinker says. Instead, progress is problem-solving, and we should look at things like climate change, pandemics, and the threat of war as problems to be solved, not inevitable apocalypses in waiting. "We will never have a perfect world, and it would be dangerous to seek one," he says. "But there's no limit to the betterments we can attain if we continue to apply knowledge to enhance human flourishing."
Topics Discussed:
* How his thinking on liberalism has changed in light of recent events
* Presumably it's still the antidote, but what nuances should we keep in mind
* For example, free speech is sacrosanct, but with today's technology, "lies get halfway around the world before the truth can tie its laces."
* The gatekeepers to the public square are increasingly concentrated.
* Technology/social media exacerbate this issue
* What should we do?
* Advice to young adults
* How to navigate these dynamics
* Career considerations
* His thoughts on capitalism, e.g., Coca Cola, MLB, Delta protesting Georgia; Dr. Seuss;
* What about our current situation reconfirms his views? What has caused a rethink?
* What has he changed his mind about recently?
* What does he believe that nobody else does?
* What is he most hopeful about? Most concerned about?

Author and leadership expert David Marquet wasn’t born a master communicator. But he became one...and you can too, just make sure you never say this one word!
As a Navy captain, David’s command of the submarine U.S.S. Santa Fe turned the ship around from worst to first in terms of crew retention and morale. A remarkable story and one that led to his post-retirement career of writing and speaking about motivational leadership.
See our full conversation here: https://youtu.be/YiAb3g5JtCE?sub_confirmation=1
Read the show notes here: https://briankeating.com/blog.php
David is rightfully proud of the fact that a record number of future submarine captains emerged from the Santa Fe. He was inspired by the experience to write his first book, “Turn the Ship Around!” As he points out, this title has a Star Wars connection. It is the name of a song from The Family Guy parody of “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” so, when googling, you find his book and workbook but also videos of the catchy tune.
