In today's Quick Fix, I look into an Amstrad CPC 6128 which was shocked by connecting a 12V power supply to the 5V connector. We were lucky and it was mostly RAM chips that failed! Then I make a quick mod to prevent that kind of overvoltage from ever happening again.
I was sure this kind of garbled screen was caused by a faulty CRT controller. It turns out, I was totally wrong! Along the way we take a good look at how video is generated in the Amstrad CPC and what some of the most common RAM failure patterns are.

We have two Sinclair ZX Spectrum+ computers with REALLY bad video image quality. This is a pretty frequent fault and is usually caused by bad electrolytic capacitors generating unstable voltages inside the computer. Here we learn how to diagnose and fix the bad video quality caused by the capacitors.
We take a good look at the voltage-generating circuitry inside the Spectrum (it generates +12V, +5V, and -5V from a 9V DC power supply) and try to understand how it all works. Then we take a look at the voltage signals with the oscilloscope and confirm that the electrolytic capacitors are most likely faulty.
Finally, we replace all the electrolytic capacitors, measure everything again, and test the final image quality and compare it to how it was at the beginning.

I troubleshoot and fix two MSX SVI 728 computers, both of which had internal cables held by hot glue from the factory! Is this one of the worst-built computers ever? One had a glitchy video out, and the other one worked fine but didn't have any color.

Today I'm taking a sad-looking Amiga 500 and restoring it into something much better looking and much more functional. I try both retrobrighting with sun (sunbrighting?) and with liquid hydrogen peroxide with different results. Finally, I swap out the internal floppy disk drive for a Gotek with an external OLED screen.

This Amstrad CPC 464 had resisted all previous attempts at being repaired. And since I like a good challenge and I have a soft spot for Amstrads, I decided to take it on. The symptoms were a black screen with no video signal at all. It turns out, multiple faulty components made this repair more challenging than usual.

Sometimes we want to force the Amstrad to use the upper 64KB of RAM as the main RAM. For example when we have a faulty RAM chip in the upper RAM, or when the Amstrad isn't starting up with faulty lower RAM.
Today we build an adaptor to replace the HAL (PAL) chip that forces the Amstrad to use the upper RAM bank as the main RAM. It's actually really simple and only takes a socket with a few bridges on it.
With that in hand, we then test the upper RAM, find a faulty chip, replace it, and test everything again.
