Uncle Fester's HI Synthesis from I2 and Red Phosphorus in Water/Toluene Part 1
In this video I attempt the synthesis of hydriodic acid as described in Uncle Fester's Secrets of Methamphetamine Manufacture, 7th Edition, page 160, paragraph 2. You can download this book for free from the link below. Weather forced me to break this video into two parts. The second part will be up in a couple days when this rain clears out.

In this video I show how uranyl sulfate is prepared from uranium trioxide which itself was made using the method shown in the previous video. Uranyl sulfate is VERY useful since it can be used to prepare a very wide range of uranyl salts by metathesis reactions with barium salts. The alkali uranates are different from the diuranates we've previously seen. They have a formula R2UO4 where R is Na or K (R can also be Rb and Cs).

In this video I demonstrate the original Finkelstein Reaction by synthesizing diiodomethane from dichloromethane. The Finkelstein Reaction can be used to convert methyl and primary alkyl chlorides and alkyl bromides to alkyl iodides. The reaction requires nothing more than dry acetone and sodium iodide (potassium iodide will not work). Secondary alkyl chlorides and alkyl bromides will react but the reaction rate is dramatically slower. Tertiary alkyl halides are unreactive. An aromatic Finkelstein reaction also exists as do improved versions of the reaction for aliphatic compounds.

Follow along as I prepare sodium bismuthate from bismuth trioxide, bromine, and aqueous sodium hydroxide. The following synthesis is taken from The Handbook of Preparative Inorganic Chemistry, edited by Georg Brauer. Volume 1 page 627-628. It has been modified slightly for clarity. You can see the step by step procedure for this synthesis on my website at: http://www.poormanschemist.com/PMC_Grimoire/PMC_Grimoire.html#nabio3

For the second time in my life I observed particles of a dried compound begin breaking themselves into pieces spontaneously although this time it was on a much larger scale than before. If anyone has ANY idea what is happening here I would love to hear it! The obvious choice is that the dry material is hygroscopic and somehow absorbing water from the air is doing this. Given that I didn't observe this happening in the desiccator that's a good place to start. But how would that cause the particles to so violently break themselves apart??? WTAF is happening here???!!

In this video I make thorium sulfate from thorium hydroxide that I made in a previous video. This curious compound is pretty soluble in cold water but pretty insoluble in hot water. Based on my observations during this synthesis just under boiling is probably ideal for getting maximal precipitation of the sulfate.

In this video I give my thoughts on a popular method used to extract freebase DMT from various plant sources and why it's a bad extraction method. I do this purely for purposes of harm reduction and education. I do not now nor have I ever condoned anyone manufacturing controlled substances for any reason.

In this video I make bromoauric acid by reacting precipitated gold powder with hydrobromic acid and elemental bromine generated by the addition of small portions of 48.5% nitric acid. Once the bromoauric acid solution was made potassium bromide was added and the solution was put through several cycles of evaporation and reconstitution with water to remove the residual HBr, Br2, and HNO3. The final product was crystallized under vacuum (no crystal film pics on this video though).
I couldn't figure out how to put a link in this video on BC so I am going to include a link to my buddies channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkI_VAWYzdy96RiZQlweMlA
