Did scientists recently detect evidence for an Anti-Universe, one where time flows backwards? Or is it an overreach into unsupportable hype? I explore the data that led scientists to make claims about ghostly neutrinos that are their own anti-particles. How do scientists interpret data like these and how do physicists reveal the hidden symmetries of nature?
Stange signals were seen in recent years by a NASA-funded radio telescope flown aloft over Antarctica by a giant helium filled balloon. The device, called the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA), detects radio signals produced when high-energy particles coming from cosmic sources smash into earth’s atmosphere. Some radio signals waves skim the Earth before being detected by ANITA, and others reflect off the ice. ANITA can tell the difference and some claim their odd behavior are indicative of signals traveling backwards in time. Or are there other interpretatisn? Found out in this video!
Technical write up https://arxiv.org/pdf/1603.05218.pdf
Characteristics of Four Upward-pointing Cosmic-ray-like Events Observed with ANITA
We report on four radio-detected cosmic-ray (CR) or CR-like events observed with the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA), a NASA-sponsored long-duration balloon payload. Two of the four were pre- viously identified as stratospheric CR air showers during the ANITA-I flight. A third stratospheric CR was detected during the ANITA-II flight. Here we report on characteristics these three unusual CR events, which develop nearly horizontally, 20-30 km above the surface of the Earth. In addition, we report on a fourth steeply upward-pointing ANITA-I CR-like radio event which has characteristics consistent with a primary that emerged from the surface of the ice. This suggests a possible τ-lepton decay as the origin of this event, but such an interpretation would require significant suppression of the Standard Model τ-neutrino cross section.

Was 2020 really the "worst year ever," as some would have us believe? Or are things getting better? Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker has shown that poverty, pollution and other challenges are on the wane and we're doing better now in every one of a host of important metrics compared with 30 years ago. Yet progress isn't inevitable, and it doesn't mean everything gets better for all humans all the time, Pinker says. Instead, progress is problem-solving, and we should look at things like climate change, pandemics, and the threat of war as problems to be solved, not inevitable apocalypses in waiting. "We will never have a perfect world, and it would be dangerous to seek one," he says. "But there's no limit to the betterments we can attain if we continue to apply knowledge to enhance human flourishing."
Topics Discussed:
* How his thinking on liberalism has changed in light of recent events
* Presumably it's still the antidote, but what nuances should we keep in mind
* For example, free speech is sacrosanct, but with today's technology, "lies get halfway around the world before the truth can tie its laces."
* The gatekeepers to the public square are increasingly concentrated.
* Technology/social media exacerbate this issue
* What should we do?
* Advice to young adults
* How to navigate these dynamics
* Career considerations
* His thoughts on capitalism, e.g., Coca Cola, MLB, Delta protesting Georgia; Dr. Seuss;
* What about our current situation reconfirms his views? What has caused a rethink?
* What has he changed his mind about recently?
* What does he believe that nobody else does?
* What is he most hopeful about? Most concerned about?

#BarryBarish #LIGO #GravitationalWaves
Barry Barish is an emritus professor at Caltech, where he has worked since 1963. He became director of the LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) project in 1997, which led to his Nobel Prize in 2017. He has many other awards and is a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences and American Physical Society, of which he was also president.
Barry joins our Nobel Minds playlist on the INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE podcast. He shared the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics with Rai Weiss and Kip Thorne “for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves.”
We discuss Barry’s long and remarkable career that covers many disciplines within physics. It’s not the standard model, but he has a confidence about himself and his contributions that make it seem perfectly natural to have been part of such varied, noteworthy projects during his career. Despite that, Barry also admits to feeling like an imposter at times, especially when singing the same Nobel register as Einstein. What a moment!

#science #Oppenheimer #ChristopherNolan #film Do you want to know how an atomic bomb works? Today, I present a deep dive into the deadly physics behind Oppenheimer an epic film about the life and science of America’s Prometheus, the man who built the atomic bomb. I'll fill in the gaps, explain complex physics with simple animations, and take you on a tour of the quantum realm as we explore "Oppenheimer," Christopher Nolan's magnum opus!
Nolan masterfully crafts a deeply moving and haunting character study of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man behind the Manhattan Project with a focus on Oppenheimer himself, and the bomb. This proves to be brilliant as it explores the extreme challenges and aftermath of his actions, revealing the guilt and weight he carries for the thousands of lives lost in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Cillian Murphy's portrayal of Oppenheimer is nothing short of exceptional, conveying a broken man filled with conviction and regret for his monumental yet devastating achievements.
Nolan's commitment to practical effects shines through, delivering a monumental achievement without a single shot of CGI. The film becomes a thrilling and intense experience throughout its 3-hour runtime.
The stellar ensemble cast, including Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, brings depth and brilliance to the narrative, making each moment on screen captivating and meaningful.
Despite its lengthy runtime, "Oppenheimer" flows seamlessly, with engaging dialogue and characters keeping the audience hooked. Nolan's artistic choices, like the use of color and black-and-white scenes, further paint Oppenheimer as a deeply complex character, haunted by his past demons yet aware of the far-reaching consequences of his revolutionary work.
In "Oppenheimer," Nolan once again proves his mastery as a filmmaker, delivering a mature and profound biopic that honors one of the most significant figures in history. This film stands as a testament to Nolan's importance in the world of cinema, leaving audiences eagerly anticipating the chance to revisit this cinematic masterpiece.
