When you add tread to a Lego 4x4 you get maximum traction. It goes through snow, loose dirt, over huge rocks and logs, and it can't high center because the body is tread. It is a tank and a truck. Better than an all tread because the tread and tire have different traction and mechanical characteristics.

What goes backward you push it forward? This CVT. Take a look at how torque is transferred through this Lego CVT. "Frictionless" refers to the CVT not using a slipping belt, plate or viscous coupling to transfer torque. Friction still exists in all of the moving parts.
