Hi, this is Michelle. We will learn Mozart’s Alla Turca in this lesson. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in 1756 and died in 1791. He belongs to the classical era and is considered the most brilliant prodigy in music history. Mozart started to compose before he reached 5. At age 6, he could play harpsichord, piano, violin, improvise fugues, write minuets, sight-read perfectly, and recall tunes in their totalities. At 8, he composed his 1st symphony. Then first oratorio at 11 and first opera at age 12. A prolific composer, Mozart composed more than 600 works during his short-lived 35 years.
Among all his works are 18 piano sonatas and 27 piano concertos. Alla Turca is the 3rd movement of No. 11, A major sonata, and written in Rondo form, comprised of ABA’ and coda. It is in 2/4 time and the key is in A minor. The opening section A is lively and sets the mood of the piece. The right hand’s melody is vivid, crispy, and easy to remember, while left hand plays the accompaniment quietly. The original score that I use includes only loud (forte) and soft (piano) markers, and no other signs are given. Bar 25 to 30 is written in A major, the parallel major of the key A minor. The right-hand plays octaves, and the left-hand arpeggios quickly, this section is challenging, especially for the smaller hands.
B, is also written in A major, starts in bar 32 and finishes in bar 64. While the left hand plays the same accompaniment softly, the right hand has the most difficult part of this piece. The abundance of 16th notes between bar 32 to 55 requires dexterity. The pace of this piece increases the chances of mistakes. I recommend using staccato and legato alternatingly in practices. Section B ends with the same A major passage as section A. Section A’, almost identical to the section A, reappears in bar 65, and the music goes back to A minor. The only difference is in the A major segment, the octaves in broken form, which makes it a major challenge to play with precision. The only way to overcome it is through hard work.
Coda starts in bar 96 and the music finishes in A major, which is very unusual. The highest notes in bar 97-98 and 103-104, have 2 beats, while others are with one, hence one must release the chords once playing the 1-beat notes. The short appoggiaturas in bar 101 and 108, must be played swiftly without delay. The left hand’s Alberti Bass from bar 109 to 115, must be played lightly without holding the first note. The music finally ends with a V-I authentic cadence. This video includes piano demonstration and instruction. I hope you will enjoy it.

During the 1890s, Elgar gradually built up a reputation as a composer. He is best known for the first of the five Pomp and Circumstance Marches, that were composed between 1901 and 1930. The piece was routinely played in the popular television show “Last Night of the Proms”, and became familiar to television viewers all over the world.
“Salut D’amour Op. 12- Love’s Greeting” was written in 1888, originally for violin and piano. 謝明琪免費鋼琴課,Michelle Lin Free Piano Lessons:
