If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. What is Revival? It’s a bringing back to life. Why do we need revival? We live in dark days. Our country has forgotten God. Our world is shrouded in spiritual darkness. Let's pray that Revival Showers of Blessings come upon God's people. We're in a drought. Amos 8:11, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD. Satan is devouring many souls. We need some Bible believing churches across our land . God can bring life from deadness. Revival begins with a return to God’s Word. We can pray, like Habakkuk: O Lord, revive thy work, Habakkuk 3:2. Psalm 85:6 Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee? Some churches have lost their way. Have we become more dependent on methods, techniques, strategies, and programs, than on prayer and the Holy Spirit? Have we lost confidence in the power of the Word to convict, the gospel to convert - and the Spirit - to draw men to Christ? We have seen what human effort, creativity, and technology can do; we know what money, organisation, and promotion can do; but we have yet to see what God can do! We must earnestly seek God in prayer. The church is in a crisis - it’s cold, decaying, dying. The carnal programs and entertainment are empty and shallow. Many believers are suffering from spiritual malnutrition. We must restore the Truth! The saints of God need to be awakened and jolted into action. The church desperately needs to be awakened from its sloth and lumber! God’s harshest words of reproof were not to the pagan world, but to the people of God. As we humble ourselves God will hear us. It’s pride that will hinder God’s work in us. Our Lord says, humble yourselves. We have to lay aside pride. The stale, stagnant, worldly-minded church is dishonouring God and we need to return unto the Lord. There’s a Problem of neglect - of the Bible, of prayer. A lack of the love of God for souls. The sin of Worldliness. PRAYER is mentioned 38 times in Acts. Every significant event in the history of the early church can be traced to prayer. We must Wait upon God for His mercy and blessing. Let us get back that old holy Passion. Amos 6:1, Woe unto them that are at ease in Zion. We need an old-fashioned, Hell-fire-and-brimstone, God-honouring, sin-convicting, soul-winning, Bible-preaching, Revival. Revival is a rebirth, a renewal of God’s life. It means to renew or restore to new life that which is dying or dead. To bring back to life. To repair, and keep alive. How can we have a true Revival? How can we become what God wants us to be? “Power from on high is the supreme need of today!” (Finney) It’s the Spirit that gives life. 2 Corinthians 3:6 …the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. The power of God is spiritual power, transforming power. Revival will only come after true repentance. We need this mind shift called repentance. Repent of worldliness, of carnality. Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. Can we honestly search out our hearts, with an honest self-examination? Lamentations 3:40 says, Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD. We need the fire – to burn up all the dross! Revival means an overwhelming sense of the HOLINESS of God. A CONVICTION and BROKENNESS OVER SIN. 1 Thess 1:9 ...how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God. Let's cry out, like Isaiah: (64:1) “Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down...” It’s time to take hold of God. God calls us to holy living. We’ve got to reach out to our Dying, perishing world. The early Salvation Army folk's motto was: "Go for souls, and go for the worst!" How is our ZEAL for souls? Do we have any? Any passion for God? Or are we asleep? Where is the divine FIRE? The fire on the altar? The red-hot faith? Let’s kindle again the holy fires of spiritual life. Keep the fire burning! We need a Holy Desperation: Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Do we Earnestly seek Him? Is there the inward yearning - to please Him? To give Him glory? May the church be transformed - to be a soul-saving station. A place of healing and deliverance. "Revival is nothing else than a new beginning of obedience to God.” Do we hunger for a renewed love for God? Will we seek after God’s ways? A Simple Gospel Acts 16: 30 -31 As we meditate upon the gracious work of God as we celebrate the Lord’s table, I am drawn to a famous passage in Acts 16:30 -31 25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. 26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed. 27 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. 28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here. 29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas, 30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house As we come now to the table, let us be reminded of the simplicity of the gospel. On one hand, it is true that there is deep wisdom and knowledge in the execution of our salvation. Paul himself would say in Romans 11:33, O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! But on the other hand, there is also simplicity in the message of the gospel, that even a child can understand it and even the uneducated can fully comprehend it. As we commemorate the work of our Lord and with the help of the passages before us, I would like to remind you of simple things: 1. The Simplicity of the Problem • Verse 31 the soldier cried, what must I do to be saved? • There is simplicity in that question. • Amidst all the terrible things happening in our life, amidst all many complications of our existence, at the very root of everything is the simple reality of our problem. That we are not saved. Saved from what? • We understand that we are all under the wrath of an Almighty holy God. • He is against sinners such as us. • In simple terms, at the very core our problem is not that we have corrupt politicians, or we don’t have all the money in the world to live comfortably, nor we have sickness that hinders us to experience a quality life. • The great question of humanity then is how can we be right before God, how to get away from the wrath of God, how then to be saved? 2. The Simplicity of the Solution • Paul and Silas answered that question then with promptness, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ” • It’s as if Paul and Silas were asked with a simple mathematical question of “1 + 1 = ?” and then both of them will answer immediately “2!” • I remember when I was still unsaved back in High School, our catholic religion teacher asked us the same question, “what should we do to be saved?” And I remember Jay, who is a son of a born-again minister raised up his hands and without waiting for the recognition of the teacher responded, “Faith in Jesus Christ” Then, I felt embarrassed. I felt its so simple. And that obviously was dismissed by the teacher and proceeded with the requirements of what we must do – ‘Confess your sins’, ‘Do your penance’, ‘Say the Rosary’, ‘Recite the hail mary 15 times’ • But now, I realised that my classmate Jay was actually right – Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. Faith in Christ. • “I need no other argument / I need no other plea / It is enough that Jesus died / And that he died for me .” • Simplicity in the solution – there is one thing we need to do: Believe • Simplicity in the solution – there is only one name to whom we must believe – Jesus Christ. 3. The Simplicity of the Assurance • Lastly, there is simplicity in the promise, in the outcome, in the assurance – • 31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house • Thou shalt be saved… There is the true, simple yet reassuring promise of the Lord. Believe and you will be saved.. • Maybe some will ask – is that it really? Paul later would actually say that the message of the cross is a stumbling block for the Jews and a foolishness to the Greeks (1 Cor 1: 21) • But as we remember the Lord’s suffering on the cross today, we remember that the gospel is truly the power of God and the wisdom of God. • Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! / Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine! / Heir of salvation, purchase of God, /born of his Spirit, washed in his blood. The simplicity of it all is astounding – and reassuring – Sirs, what must I do to be saved? Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved, you and your household. As we commemorate the Lord’s supper, let us remember the goodness of God in his mercy. He has pardoned us. He has showed mercy to us.
