Watch how breathing changes hamstring flexibility | Flow State Sprinting
Always stretching your hamstrings? Before doing so again, watch this video because it will teach you a better way that is more natural for the body. Be-Activated is a muscle activation method that uses a simple concept. Relax the body through breathing, drop the stress levels and your body will respond in the right way for you. In this video, I demonstrate this with a simple hamstring flexibility test and then show you the changes that insufficient and correct breathing instigates on the hamstrings. This video will teach you how important breathing correctly is to your performance as an sprinter or athlete of any distance or event. Hamstring flexibility can change in just a few seconds just by altering the breathing patterns. It also shows how bad breathing, which is more common now than ever before, can limit your flexibility drastically and this can hurt your speed, power and endurance as well as leaving you open for injury.

#jawclenching is a habit that a lot of people, not just #athletes and sprinters, have picked up. It is a sign of stress and anxiety and specifically for sprinters, will disable power and speed because it will effect your sprinting technique. It is also a sign of compensation where other muscles do the job of the hips. Clenched jaw maybe a sign of the jaw and maybe the choulders compensating for your hip muscles such as psoas and glutes. ie Your jaw or your shoulders maybe doing the work off your hips and your hip muscles cannot function unless your jaw or shoulders are tight. This as you can imagine would not be benefical for #sprinting as you need a relaxed shoulders and jaw for speed and power.
In this video, I demonstrate a very quick and easy tip to address clenched jaw while you sprint. This tip came from @posturepro (https://www.youtube.com/user/posturepro1) who are fantastic experts on brain based training for improved posture and performance. But this tip will bring about a relaxed jaw and that seperation needed.
This tip relaxes the jaw and the vagus nerve which is primary source of relaxation in the body. These tips should be used whenever you find yourself clenching your jaw throughout the day. How do you know if you are clenching your jaw? When you feel your teeth (upper and lower) are touching or clenched.
I also go over a massaging technique for the jaw that can supplement the above tip.

I saw an instagram post the other day. It showed a pic of a female athlete in the foetal position obviously at the end of a tough race (could've been 400m, 800m or 1500m) where lactic acid had got hold of her. The post was basically saying this is how you should feel at the end of a race. But should you feel like this at the end of the 400m? The thought is that you should leave everything on the track and be completely spent. I disagree and I question this logic. All I can say is that a 400m athlete should not feel like this at the end of a 400m race, or even a 400m hurdles. My fastest races were the easiest races. And if they do then they started the race incorrectly. Why? My experiences show me that my fastest races were always my easiest - fact. My slowest were just painful. And chances are if you feel so spent at the end of the race that you can't stand up then you were too tight, too anxious and put too much effort in the first part of the race. And this is because you were too anxious before you even got in the blocks. Tightness and anxiety will ruin endurance and speed because it wastes energy and switches of muscles. If you start to breathe correctly before the race and bring yourself into the present moment, you've set yourself up for a great race and maybe a race close to perfection because you given yourself the foundation of relaxation. When you have the foundation of relaxation, you can start off a race quickly and briskly (which you should always do) but also conserve energy for the second bend and the home straight. When you finish the race, you'll be shocked how easy it was and you'll definitely not be collapsed on the ground exhausted.
Now I think this is valid for other events, even for endurance athletes and this video will go into this a little more deeply plus give you in depth reasons why the "train hard" philosophy is killing your speed, strength and endurance. I also talk about an interesting fact about David Rudisha's training leading into the 2012 olympics.
Enjoy
