A Game Jam - but this is actually good [GameMaker Studio 2]
There is a new game Jam incoming on the 4th of March. And if you are thinking, yaaawn... next please then I wouldn't blame you but wait! Besides winning some money you get a shoutout by PEWDIEPIE on his youtube channel which is more worth then the price money itself. At least I would highly suspect that.
That's why I am entering myself to this game jam as the programmer and I want to partner up with one of you guys who does the art for this game. Revenue is split 50/50. So if you are good and want to chip in, go to my discord and we can see if we both fit for this short term project.

This basics video tutorial shows you how to setup positional/3D sound in GameMaker Studio 2.
But before we start. What is 3D/positional sound? Well, it is simply the effect that sound is based on a distance between a listener and an (sound) emitter. I wouldn't feel right if an enemy close would have the same loudness like one far off.
And that is what GameMaker Studio is calculating for you if you setup that with a few easy steps. This effect is not necessary but a neat subtle addition to video games mostly used for ambience sfx (for example a waterfall) or sound effects.

This basics video tutorial shows you what rooms are in GameMaker and how they work, how to set the start room, how to jump into other rooms and finally what persistence means for rooms in GameMaker.
Image rooms to be like levels, each time you enter a room/level GameMaker is loading all the necessary things in there to be used and played. Rooms have properties and hold layers which also hold their respective assets ( instance layer holds instance, tileset layer has tiles etc. ). Besides having layers rooms also have properties like height and width and hold camera/view values and an inbuild physics system.
So how does it work? Well, you define the start room (default is the first room1) visible by the icon and this is how the game starts by loading in the (firsts) start room. When you want to transitions/jump to other rooms, you simply use room_goto() which will unload the current room and all its content and load in the new room with fresh content.
Persistence for rooms means that you save the last state of the room and when you jump back into it, you don't create a fresh version of it but with updates values (positions, instance, etc.). This is not recommened though because it makes sense to have a persistent instance which stores all the necessary values you want to inject into the freshly created room.
And lastly, you can customize rooms during runtime but not in the current room you are in. That means you need to set those instructions in advance.

A Robot Named Fight! is a rogue-lite sidescroller that is inspired by Super Metroid. You play as a robot that has to defeat the final boss by going through a procedually generated map, collect weapons and gadget, which in turn allow you to access previously not accessable areas like a double jump, a dash, elemental weapons or other means to survive certain enviormental hazards.
Pros:
- each time a different experience
- Super Nintendo vibes
- tons of upgrades and gadgets
- obscure vendor system
- hidden gem
- get it on a Steam sale (1 dollar, nice!)
Bad:
- clunky/sluggish movement
- not always easy or fair to win a run
- not all weapons/gadets are really useful
tldr: A very good old school forever playable Super Metroid

In this advanced video tutorial I show you how to make a slider in gamemaker studio.
What is the idea behind here?
This is rather a planet (stage) selection slider then the regular menue user interaface slider. But in the end both are in their structure quite similar.
To understand this specific approach all you need to understand it that 3 planets are being drawn and when moved their postion is being changed but at the endpoint resetted to the startposition. At the same time the indexes of those planets are being shifted one positon. On the outside it looks the same but the trick is here to hotswap indexes to get this illusion of a selection wheel.
