Port Gawler in South Australia was once an active town due to it's wharf and surrounding grain areas, however it's now known more for fishing, crabbing and bird watching. It's also quite well known for it's off road bike track and go kart tracks.
Welcome to the 'Keeping it Real' Vlog. This episode is the first in what I hope will be a regular series of videos that are much more raw in nature. They will be produced and uploaded when I am out and about and will feature some commentry and footage of activities that I feel contribute to living a balanced lifestyle and reducing stress. Appropriately, this in this first video I will discuss the concept of 'The Emotional Bucket'.

The Port River is the body of water that we most sail (and motor) on. That's simply because it's where the marina is located and in order to get to the sea, you have to steam for about an hour to get there. As a result many of the landmarks have become familiar. Many of them are actually interesting so for a while I had been thinking of doing a video focusing on the main points of interest on the river itself. Australia Day (26th January) 2022 had lovely weather and so it seemed like a perfect occasion to do this. In the evening however the weather changed and instead we had a large electrical storm!

This is a re-badged version of the first freediving video I made back in 2013. It is mainly done around the end of the Port Noarlunga Jetty. As with any old video there are definately a few things I'd do differently now however there are a few shots that still hold up to some of my more recent videos.
This jetty featured on one of the other videos on this channel as seen from the air. This time it's underwater.

I used to climb quite a bit but for health reasons thought it would no longer be possible. However after 15 years being inactive I recently started again and found that it may actually be helpful in moderation for my condition (which is an inflammatory auto immune illness).
Vertical Reality is an indoor rock climbing gym in the Adelaide area which is well run, good value for money and with a lot walls (so it can accommodate quite a lot of climbers of all abilities). It's a great workout and a lot of fun.

The coastline of the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia is well known for it's beaches and spectacular vistas. Located to the south of Adelaide and only all of it able to be visited within a day trip it is a popular location for locals and tourists.
This video features photos of the Murray River Mouth, Port Elliot, Horseshoe Bay, The Bluff, Rapid Bay, Second Valley, Port Noarlunga and Brighton Beach.

The Riesling Trail is one of the most well known cycling trails in South Australia. Originally a railway line that went between Adelaide and Spalding following the damage it received in 1983 during the 'Ash Wednesday' bushfire the line was closed down and it was instead converted into a cycling and walking trail. The trail runs from Mount Horrocks Wines (formerly the Auburn Railway station) at the southern end to Barinia Road which is a few kilometers to the north of Clare.

Cycling is one of those activities that you can literally do from your front door with little fluffing around. There are a number of local rides I do that don't involve having to load my bike on to my car. This is a local block in an industrial area that feels safe even when it gets dark. Thought I would take you for a lap of it.

With our Hood 23 now in the water we can finally get onto learning how to use it. In this episode we go through a whole lot of firsts in an attempt to acquaint ourselves with our new lady as quickly as possible. I sleep on the boat for the first time, we take it out for the first time, put the sails up, take it out of the Port River and into the Gulf. We have lunch at a nice anchorage and a few other firsts, not all of which were planned!

If you are familiar with dingy sailing then you are familiar with using a centreboard, which is needed to sail effectively upwind. In yachts, the same role is normally performed by a weighted keel however in smaller trailer yachts there is a bit of a cross over and many also have retractable swing keels or centreplates. Our Hood 23 has a weighted keel of sorts but it's a shoal draft one (essentially the weight is in the bottom of the boat). It can be sailed without the centreplate but it performs significantly better upwind if it does have one installed. When we got ours although it came with a centreplate, it was not installed so from the outset our intention was to get a basic familiarity with the boat as it was and then install the centreplate. The previous owner kindly offered to assist with the installation.
Recently I had a 7 day holiday planned and instead of going away anywhere I chose to get the boat out of the water and do some work on it, including the installation of the centreplate. We some perserverence and creativity we got there in the end but as you'll see in this video, it wasn't without quite a few challenges along the way.
