What is that lump on their back? Good question. This guy is half asleep in his pond and it makes it easy to see that massive hump between his shoulder blades. That is a MUSCLE and it is what powers the front legs. It gives the bears tremendous striking and pounding and digging power.

Jim comforting Maddy before she is about to be anesthetized for surgery. Unfortunately what we thought was cancer of the spleen that could be rectified by removing the spleen, turned out to be much more serious. The cancer had already spread to her liver and other places, and we were forced to let Maddy go. Our hearts go with her. We are just broken. RIP sweetest bear in the world. The den will never be the same without you.

Jim and Leo. Leo is such a fun bear!
The whining in the background is of course Maddy (because she is not currently being pet) and the voices are some very special visitors we had yesterday. We are not generally open to the public but our little buddy Callan stopped by to see us yesterday.
