A small group of Sinn Féiners lead by local leader Patrick (Paddy) Hughes gathered at the base of the statue as the British Army and the Royal Irish Constabulary gathered in military formation to Proclaim 'King George V' as king of Great Britain and Ireland. They read a Royal proclamation from the steps of the Dundalk Court House and played 'God Save Our King' as they Union Flag was raised on the flag pole. The Sinn Féiners responded in protest by raising the 'Green Flag' (green flag with the harp) on the 'Maid of Érin' statue and singing 'God Save Ireland'. The British Army and RIC looked on in shock and amazement at the group of protesters as they could not be stopped or arrested as they were standing on private property, which is the wide base of the 'Maid of Érin' statue (now removed). A large crowd of local towns people had also gathered to watch as Dundalk at that time was considered to be a loyal town with a large unionist community, who brought employment to the town.
