July 1st we celebrate Canada here – still we are part of the main, a global, cultural, community, and this week, Allison Crowe’s licensed her music for play in stores and market-places throughout continental Europe’s western-most country, the republic of Portugal. Her songs will be heard daily across the Algarve’s beautiful coast, the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira, in the open air of Lisbon’s artful street galleries, riding the slopes and falls of the country’s lush interior, its mountainous northern region, mingling in the mystery and magic of coastal Alentejo. Up and down the Iberian Peninsula this sound we know and love will ring out.
Why Portugal? There’s a full palette of joys and emotions to be discovered in the art of Allison Crowe. In certain of her songs, too, there is ‘saudade’ – that quality described as “a bitter-sweet, existential yearning and hopefulness towards something over which one has no control”. The “unassailable determinism which compels the resigned yearning of saudade” is the soul of Portugal’s Fado music.

Visually representing the live intensity is footage from "A Corner Brook Tidings" -- the charming 2012 documentary film directed and produced by Peter Buckle -- a project graciously supported by the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council, with special thanks to Katrina Rice, NLAC Program Officer. Buckle and his camera team crew, Ryan David Butt and Jamie Brace, filmed Allison's "Tidings" concert in Corner Brook, Newfoundland -- on Canada's Atlantic coast.

Canadian musician Allison Crowe, an independent success of the new DIY era in popular music, originally recorded this song, "Alive and Breathing", singing and playing all instruments.
When she decided to include it on her "This Little Bird" album, (which she engineered and produced), Allison Crowe invited bassist Dave Baird and percussionist Laurent Boucher to add their distinctive talents to the mix.

Before Allison Crowe returned her song "Philosophy" to its place in her repertoire as a slow-burning modern blues for solo piano, it was a rocking closer to her band shows early in this decade.

This is the version performed by Allison Crowe's trio - of Allison on vocals and piano, Dave Baird on bass, and Kevin Clevette on drums - one afternoon in 2001 as the trio made their way to Seattle, Washington to play for Pearl Jam fans from across the continent. The band was captured live-off-the-floor by Turtle Recording's Larry Anschell (PJ, Sarah McLachlan, k-os, and more).
"Philosophy" closes the "Lisa's Song + 6 Songs" EP/CD - just as the song concluded many a concert when Allison Crowe rocked out with her band. As the final song of a concert set or encore, Allison would often build to a coda of Pearl Jam's "Jeremy". It was all mighty frenzied. With bassist Dave Baird deep in the groove, drummer Kevin Clevette's drumsticks would splinter amidst the Bacchanalia.

When Allison Crowe first appeared on national television in her home country (some 14 years ago), television host Vicki Gabereau, “Canada’s Queen of Chat” observed: “You don't sound like anybody else, honey. Nobody sounds like you."
This holds true today for the musician (vocals, piano, guitar, bodhran, fiddle) and her bandmates: Billie Woods (guitar, vocals); Celine Greb (cello, vocals); Sarah White (multi-instrumentalist); & Dave Baird (bass, vocals).
The group group’s hybrid of Canadiana, Celtic, jazz, roots, folk, soul and original rock delivers on Allison Crowe’s mission to make "Soulful. Alive. Joyous. Grievous. Real, true, music”.

Today, as pioneering musician Janis Ian is joined in a march forward by such high profile recording acts as Radiohead and Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Ani DiFranco's DIY beacon shines ever-bright.
Asked, "Why music?", Allison Crowe responds: "Why breathing?"
Just as naturally, the Canadian musician embraces DiFranco's truth: "If you are disgustingly sincere and terribly diligent, there are ways for any serious artist to operate outside the corporate structure."
Which makes it really about the music. Best-known for her piano music, one of the first guitar songs Allison Crowe performed on-stage was the Ani DiFranco song "Both Hands". Fortunately, Nanaimo, B.C.'s Scott Littlejohn was on hand to record this moment live (in 2004).

The first Crows song Crowe performed on-stage in her teens was Raining in Baltimore. (A popular recording of this song is heard on her "Secrets" album.)
