I'm revisiting the topic of rose pruning, focusing on the traditional "rules" and gardening folk wisdom. Some make a lot of sense, others depend on the situation, and yet others are without merit in my opinion. You may remember that I did this topic with basically the same points a few years ago, but since then I've upgraded from SD video to 4K, so I figured it was time for a refresh. Here's the timline: 00:00 Intro 00:40 Prune when the forsythia blooms 02:27 Reduce to 5 stems at 18" 03:43 Focus first of dead, diseased, damaged & crossing stem 05:27 Prune to outwards-facing buds 06:38 Use clean & sharp tools 08:00 Angle your pruning cuts 09:55 Open the center

My relationship with roses is not exclusive: I love to come to plant sales with interesting and hard-to-find perennials and shrubs as well. These uncommon plants can really help to grab the attention of plant shoppers. In this video, I'll give some suggestions on where to find cool seed varieties, and how to stratify the seeds (if necessary).

This cute little black duck was the survivor a coyote attack on our farm, and as you'll see from the footage, she doesn't like to be alone. She's taken to following humans around the farm and visiting the neighbors when we're not handy. In this vid, we find a new home for our lonely duck, and it's a good one: with Chris and Stef from the Lovin Off The Land channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/lovinofftheland
Sorry, not much gardening content in this video - but it's just a slice of our life around the farm.

Thanks everyone for your business and support this year - here's a look at the rose garden and fields as I begin deadheading. Nice rain this week and I'm feeling like we'll have an outstanding 2nd flush of growth and blooms. Crossing fingers.

Humidity can have a serious impact on how your plants grow - and when you're growing either indoors or in a greenhouse, it pays to monitor and address humidity through every stage. Plants early in propagation (germinating seeds and cuttings) usually benefit from a much higher humidity (70% +) while plants later in development usually benefit from much lower moisture levels. It varies by the plants, of course, but in this video I'll go through some of the basics of why humidity matters and what you can do about it.

One property of your potting mix you should be concerned with: does you soil have enough air spaces to maintain healthy roots? In this video, I'll demonstrate a quick an easy way to measure the approximate air-filled porosity (AFP) of your potting mix. The higher the porosity, the more air space there is for your plant roots - but it also means you may have to water more frequently. With a lower AFP, you can go longer between watering, but your plants may be more susceptible to root rot disease. Generally, a good AFP for containers and nursery production is between 15 and 25%. Here's a link with more details on what the % ranges mean:

Let's go through growing roses from seed, all the way from seed collecting, stratification, germination and transplant. I have another couple of vids on the topic of rose seeds. The first one covers the question of what to expect:

The second one shows how to clean the seeds from rose hips:

Found footage! I'm not sure what I planned for these clips when I shot them, but the audio was blown from wind noise. I see all the work in progress: pillar supports and archways not yet grown-over, bare patches (and crowded patches), roses in all stages and ages. Ready to go another round!

In this DIY video, we replace our cedar garden rose arch and build a larger, sturdier arbor. The replacement is built with 1 ⅜” chain link fence rail, bent to shape, and dug down by over 3 feet to resist the wind and weight of climbing roses.
Best view of the finished arbor is at 26:53
Materials before cutting/bending at 1:50
Bending the arch at 7:44
Planning/prepping the garden at 11:15
Flattening the tube ends to make tabs at 17:20
Assembly of arches at 22:04
