February 24, 2012 – Muhammad Sahimi – The Scott Horton Show – Episode 2257
Muhammad Sahimi, Professor of Chemical Engineering and political columnist on Iran issues, discusses his article “Deconstructing Lieberman’s Iran Resolution;” the false premises upon which Senate Resolution 380 is based; Iran’s closely inspected and safeguarded uranium enrichment program; rehashing the Qom facility “gotcha” lies from 2009; why the US isn’t interested in a diplomatic resolution, wherein sanctions are dropped in exchange for Iran implementing the Additional Protocol and allowing more stringent inspections; and why even regime change won’t stop Iran’s civilian nuclear program, unless Tehran is occupied for decades.

Jeff Kaye, a psychologist and writer at Firedoglake, discusses his article “Obama Admits He Banned Only ‘Some’ of the CIA’s Torture Techniques;” why the Senate Intelligence Committee won’t release its 6000-page CIA torture report; and why President Obama would be impeached by now if he was a Republican.

In the latest installment of the Q & A show, Scott and Eric discuss the following:
*What Scott's been doing with all the free time he used to spend on Twitter
*What it was like to be antiwar in America in the run-up to Iraq War 2
*The motives of the Iraq War 2 cheerleaders
*The quietly growing acceptance of Austrian Business Cycle Theory for explaining the boom and bust cycle
*The absurdity of punishing people for earning a living, more commonly referred to as the income tax
*And More!
Here's the post where Scott lays out the best articles to read on how the Bush Administration lied America into Iraq War 2:

Trita Parsi discusses John Bolton’s tenure in the Trump administration, during which time he worked tirelessly to sabotage any form of negotiation between the United States and Iran. Bolton is a fierce advocate for America’s alliance with Israel, says Parsi, which often means acting in ways that are actually quite harmful to American interests. Netanyahu, Parsi explains, worries that any peace between the U.S. and Iran would threaten Israel’s position as the dominant superpower in the Middle East, and it would no longer be so easy for them to accomplish the things the Netanyahu government wants to do, like annexing more and more Palestinian territory. Unless you have the warped neocon worldview, however, Scott and Parsi agree that attempted American hegemony in the Middle East can only mean disaster for the true interests of the American people.

Scott interviews Suadad al-Salhy about her recent piece on the proposed U.S. plan to create an autonomous Sunni state in western Iraq. This would theoretically allow the U.S. to continue to exert control in the country, preventing the dreaded “land bridge” connecting Iran to Syria and other allies in the Mediterranean. But this plan is idiotic for a number of reasons, say Scott and al-Salhy, not least of which being that America has been fighting on behalf of the Iraqi Shiites for years, and would have to turn on them to ally themselves with the Sunnis who used to rule the country. This is likely to put the U.S. troops who are still in Iraq at great risk, which al-Salhy fears in turn could be used as further justification for more intervention.
Suadad al-Salhy is freelance journalist covering Iraq’s politics and security. She is a former Reuters correspondent who has written for Al Jazeera, Newsweek and Lebanon’s Daily Star. Follow her on Twitter @suadadalsalhy.

Scott speaks with Ara Sanjian, an Associate Professor of History at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, about the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the region of Nagorno-Karabakh. This is an excellent interview for listeners unfamiliar with the situation. Scott and Sanjian go over the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict more broadly before focusing on the flare-up over Nagorno-Karabakh in 2020 and the state of things today. The conflict also has notable international implications with the Russian government backing Armenia and the Turkish government backing Azerbaijan. Scott and Sanjian explore the international ramifications of this dispute on an already messy world stage.
