Game History
Super Sprint came from the arcade legends Atari Games in 1986. The arcade cabinet had 3 steering wheels, brakes and an accelerator. It was quite a unique look to the machine and was a big hit. It only a year later, and it was ported by Electric Dreams Software for the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC & Atari ST. There was a NES port, but I am uncertain on who ported it.
The port to the home systems were greeted with scores ranging from average to high.
Later on it was included with various compilations like Big Box, Grand Prix Selection, and We Are The Champions. It was also available with The Hit Squad budget label and even free with Your Sinclair Issue 74 in 1992.
Game Objective
So this is a racing game as if you didn't know by the title and your main aim is to finish 3rd or better on 8 tracks. You're racing against 3 other cars unless you have other players chipping in. When that happens they will take over the computer controlled cars. As your playing you can also upgrade your car by picking up the 3 spanners that show up on the tracks. You can also pick up some extra points too, but you must watch out for oil slicks, water slicks on the road. There is also a moving tornado that will wreck any car that gets close. Being in contact with this will spin yours and the other cars and who knows where you will finish.
Upgrading is a breeze. All you do is pick up 3 spanners in a race and your whizzed off to where you can upgrade your traction, acceleration, higher speed and even increasing your score.
That's the basics of the game in a nutshell
Spectrum Port
Now the Spectrum port starts off with a really nice loading screen. It gets you in the mood with a red f1 car being shown along with another smaller car at the bottom. The title of the game dominates the screen in the middle along with the publisher logo in the right-hand corner. All in all it's very well drawn and hardly any colour clash.
Once the game is loaded you are greeted with a few choices which are numbered 1 to 4
Number 1 picks if you wanted to have a 1 or 2 player game. When you pick 2 players you will be racing against player 2 and 2 other computer controlled cars.
Numbers 2 and 3 are to pick what control method you would like to use for each player
Number 4 is to start the game
Pick what you would like and once you hit number 4 key this will put you onto a screen where you can see the 8 tracks and here you pick which one you want to start on.
The game itself is excellent with a good pace on the cars and the controls are quite tight. Of course like with any racing game you need to get used to the tracks and learn where the best places to brake and accelerate are to get those times to the lowest possible. I found myself bombing out on the first lap but gett

Released in 1987 by System 3 this game takes The Way of the Exploding Fist, throws another player on the screen and some bonus stages in, and cranks it up to 10.
It's a great game for the Speccy, but I find the main graphics to be a bit ugly. It doesn't have the speed like the #commodore64 version, which makes the game chug along.

First off can I apologize that I ran out of time on this review and had to revert to having it just written. Hopefully, this won't happen again but if it does at least you get something you can read while watching the video. Anyway let's crack on with it shall we?
Today we are going to look at new game called Nixie and the Seeds of Doom by Andy Johns.
Now Andy Johns has done some really good games in the last few years from his rejuvenation of Monty Mole games to the awesome game Ooze. Some of these are available to own physically so look around on the ZX Spectrum websites and I am sure you will find them ready to buy.
So, before we take a look at Andy's new game I want to bring you back to the first Nixie game in the series which is called Nixie the Glade Sprite. I also want to point out that I will be showing both the normal and ULA Plus versions and if you look at the bottom of the screen it will let you know which one you're looking at.
Anyway, the first game was called Nixie the Glade Sprite and was released in 2018. This game introduced us to this cute little character Nixy, that has an important task of looking after the Gaia stone. This stone gives life to all nature in the land, but Nixie notices there is something wrong with the stone. Everything is corrupted and the plants are attacking everyone.
You’re task is to find a special pool of water that will cure the stone and then you have to take it to the Guardian Tree.
Seems simple but wait until you try the game. Now I'm not going to say this is one of those frustrating games but you will have to restart a few times to get the right path. What helps is that not every single jump you have to be exact. It makes the game more enjoyable to play rather than be frustrated and hit the reset button.
What really hits you is the level of detail and the use of colour. Obvious care has been put in with some smooth animation from Nixie to everything around you. Colour is just a joy on the eyes and to enhance it, even more, you have the ULA Plus version of the game.
The music really fits in and creates an atmosphere that's perfect for the game. Also, the controls are also very responsive so you know when you mess up it's your fault.
All in all, the game is a wonderful thing to behold and everyone should give it a try.
So...what's the newest Nixie game like I hear you ask?
Well, this is a continuation from the first game and in this, you have to find out what's causing the corruption that's threatening her home. You will be going through caves, old castles and that kind of thing. You will also be dodging knights, ghosts and all kinds of creepy stuff. It’s basically more of the same which is no bad thing when Andy Johns is at the helm.
You get more great animation and colour (and yes a ULA

Moon Strike reminds me of the classic Namco arcade hit Xevious.
You fly around shooting anything in the air and you can also bomb stuff that's on the ground. It's a very simplistic affair and is one of those game where you just want to play something but not turn on your brain.
The graphics are large and detailed although they are monochrome and the playing area is small. Scrolling is surprisingly very smooth and I noticed the hit detection is really good.
The best bit about this game is the loading of the game, as it uses Mirrorsoft's Movieload. It tells about the background story and what your mission is along with some other bits. It's very funny and kind of taken out of a Beano or Dandy comic.
Crash Magazine gave this game 77% and said it was “a super shoot'em up with a humorous edge” and I think that sums it up quite well.
The emulator used in these videos is the wonderful Virtual Retro Machine. It is currently written for Windows, Linux and Mac OS.

So this past week those lucky backers of the ZX Spectrum Next were getting their boxes of joy. This has been a long wait but if you want something to be great then that's the price you have to pay. Sadly, I was not one of those people, but thank god for emulation and Cspect as it allows me to put my foot in the door and examine some wonderful apps and games that are coming out for the machine.
Which brings me on to this game, Bubblegum Bros.
Now this game takes inspiration from the classic Bubble Bobble, but turns it slightly on its head. For one, you don't capture the enemy with the bubble, but you do kill them. Items pop up all the time from increasing your score, full screen effects like fire raining down and also that very useful level skip.
This also means that enemies rain down on you once you have killed them so its non-stop action and that's where this game differs drastically from Bubble Bobble. The sheer speed of the gameplay makes it a frantic kill-a-than to survive until the level skip appears. Which thank the heavens it's a co-op 2 player game or if you are like me and have no friends then just use player 1 and watch player 2 get wiped out on the first stage (yeah take that player 2)
The level design is just fantastic and wouldn't look out of place in Bubble Bobble. The graphics are done really well and there is a lot of colour on screen. I didn’t notice any slowdown or anything that would hinder a launch title most of the time.
Sound is also great which gets you in the mood for some bubble blowing, monster killing fun.
So who developed this game you ask?
Well it was done by one Adrian Cummings and you can purchase the game on digital download right now. In fact the time of writing this review there is an amazing deal to buy 5 games from him for the ZX Spectrum Next at an insane low price. Link to this is below this review.
All I can say is wow this is a great start to the machines life and let's keep it going
Added Note
-------------------
After a bit of consideration I have slightly lowered the playability score and added an overall score. This is because there is a little bug where you can gain a high score while leaving it alone and also there is no 1 player option. Its still a good game though.
Graphics 8/10
Sound 8/10
Playability 7/10
Overall 7/10

Back when I was a kid I had 2 board games that were very close to my heart. One was Hero Quest and the other was Space Crusade. So you can imagine how happy I was when I found out that Gremlin Graphics were to make both into games for the home computer formats of the time.
Space Crusade was the best of the 2, and it set me off on my Warhammer obsession in later years.
This game follows Space Crusade very closely which you pick from 3 teams of marines, kit them out, pick a mission and hope you can achieve that goal without getting mutilated.
While the graphics are fantastic I found the controls were a little slow. This new version gives you mouse control like the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST ports. This speeds the game up and makes everything so much better.
It's a fantastic game if you like RPG’s or strategy games, but even if you don't give it a go as it may surprise you.
