One of Sado Island’s attractions, besides its many beautiful temples and it’s gorgeous landscape, is the many Noh (Japanese traditional play) that are actually performed by local villagers in some of the many temples of the Island. Here unlike many other places in Japan, Sado Noh-watching style is more laid-back and convivial and where in the past rich and poor people mingled. Noh performances are usually quite long and uneventful compared to western style performances. It would be quite difficult to understand if you are not fluent in Japanese. Which explains why today we will only show you a fraction of what the whole performance was all about. Unganji is a Zen temple located in the mountains near Otawara City in Tochigi prefecture. Part of the Rinzai School, it was built around the Heian era during the Daiji years (1126 ~ 1131). While often ignored by travelers, Unganji offers you a breathtaking zen experience thanks to its gorgeous approach and two-story main gate. The temple is one of Japan’s four major temples for zen practices. It also was described by the famous Japanese poet Basho Matsuo (1644 ~ 1694) in one of his haiku after a visit there. Aikido Experience with Matsumaru Sensei - 合気道 - 4K Ultra HD : Despite being one of Japan’s most famous martial arts, Aikido in its actual current form is a rather new sport that was founded in the 1930s at the Aikikai Hombu Dojo by Ueshiba Morihei (1883 - 1969). It wasn’t until after the second world war however, that Aikido really boomed and started to spread across Japan. While there are many places across that nation where you can learn Aikido, we had the chance to visit one of Tokyo’s oldest dojo (1955) the Kuwamori Dojo and meet with one of its most respected teachers : Matsumaru Sensei (now 78 years old) who kindly allowed us to tag along during a private lesson at the dojo. Along with Hitachi Seaside Park’s Nemophila Harmony Festival, the Fuji Shibazakura Festival is yet another extremely popular flower festival located near Lake Motsu at the base of Mt. Fuji. Each year for one month, mid-April to mid-May, people across Japan and from all over the world come in their thousands to enjoy a beautiful parterre of Shibazakura flowers (800,000) with Mt. Fuji in the background. If your time in Japan is limited and you can only visit one flower festival, the Fuji Shibazakura Festival is a MUST, but be ready to get there as early as possible, even during the week, in order to enjoy this place in peace!
