Gun sales in California are booming. More than 600,000 were sold in 2011. However by last year, sales had jumped to 817,000. That's an increase of 36 percent. But we noticed the number of people wounded by gunfire is dropping.
Business has been hectic for Aristotle Rogel, who works at a gun store in Burbank, California. Walk-in business is up 20 percent this month. Many customers are buying more than one gun.
Asked if his customers are buying now because they are afraid they won't be able to buy later if there are new gun laws, Rogel answered: "Well, absolutely. Stock up and see hopefully nothing happens."

Venezuela has announced plans to introduce fingerprint scanners at supermarkets in a bid to stop food smugglers blamed for the crippling shortages gripping the country.
Price controls in Venezuela keep food and other basic goods up to 10 times cheaper than in neighbouring countries.
President Nicolas Maduro blames the shortages on smugglers who buy cheap products and sell them for large profits across the border, particularly in Colombia.
Under the new system, the scanners would be used to prevent people from making repeat trips to the supermarket and buying abnormally large amounts of food.
"The order has been given to the superintendency of prices to establish a biometric system in all supermarkets and commercial and distribution chain networks of the republic," Mr Maduro said.

I'm often asked versions of the following: Given that the political right is so corrupted by conservatives who seek to limit liberty in countless ways, wouldn't it be better to abandon the language of "left" vs. "right" and adopt new terminology?
My answer is that, because the terms "left" and "right" are already widely used to denote the basic political alternative, and because that alternative is in fact binary, the best approach for advocates of freedom is not to reject the prevalent terminology but to clarify it—by defining the relevant terms.
The problem with conventional approaches to the left-right political spectrum is that they either fail to define the alternatives in question, or proceed to define them in terms of non-essentials.
One common approach, for instance, fails to specify the precise nature of either side, yet proceeds to place communism, socialism, and modern "liberalism" on (or toward) the left—and fascism, conservatism, and capitalism on (or toward) the right.
This makes no sense, at least in terms of the right. Capitalism—the social system of individual rights, property rights, and personal liberty—has nothing in common with conservatism or fascism. Take them in turn.

Cost Of Bilingualism
Ottawa spends $1.5 billion a year on official bilingualism, and that's a conservative estimate.
It includes the cost of printing laws and government forms in both French and English, and offering bilingual service at federal offices and courts. It covers the budget of the federal language nannies at the official languages office. And it includes training civil servants to speak both languages and paying them bonuses for doing so, plus ad campaigns extolling the glories of bilingualism.
But it doesn't include the $900 million spent by the provinces or the hundreds of millions more spent by private companies to comply with federal and provincial language regulations.
Given that the Official Languages Act is now more than 40 years old, it is not much of a stretch to conclude that Canadians have spent more than $80 billion (in 2012 dollars) — maybe a lot more — on promoting and enforcing our phony linguistic duality.
It's time this expensive experiment in social engineering was ended.
As 2011 census figures on language revealed this week, all the money and effort expended has achieved almost nothing. Whereas about 14% of Canadians claimed to be bilingual on the 1971 census, last year just 17% did. And the rise over 40 years has been almost all from francophones who learned English because they wanted to or because they felt they had to to succeed.

Conservative leadership first official debate May 11 in Edmonton
Candidates vying to be the next leader of the Conservative Party of Canada will face off in the first party-sanctioned debate next Wednesday.
The English-language debate on May 11 will be held in Edmonton and hosted by former political journalist Tom Clark, while the official French-language debate will take place in Laval, Que. on May 25.
The party’s Leadership Election Organizing Committee (LEOC) stated in a memorandum that it is “reserving the rights to add a third debate in early August.”
Topics will be sent out to candidates one week in advance of each debate. LEOC rules stipulate that candidates are required to attend all official debates.

Last week, just before leaving on a month-long recess, Rep. Van Hollen (D-MD) declared, with much indignation and more than a twinge of bitterness, that they would not let the health care reform debate be "swiftboated."
That makes for a nice sound bite that appeals to the party's left wing but irritates most of America. And therein lies the Democrats' problem with getting more people to back their health care effort. When questioned on the merits of their proposal, they fall back on what makes them most comfortable-- appealing to the far left of their party. But this comes at the expense of everyone else -- they have consistently ignored the legitimate questions of the vast majority of the population, preferring to duck the tough questions and instead to make others the bad guy.

(LifeSiteNews) — Trudeau’s Liberal government, with the help of the far-left New Democrat Party, successfully voted to shut down the debate on controversial internet censorship bill C-11.
According to Blacklock’s Reporter, the motion to ax the debate surrounding the controversial piece of legislation was passed by a 174-146 vote. The result was unsurprising as NDP leader Jagmeet Singh struck a deal with Prime Minister Coward Justin Trudeau earlier this year vowing that his party would support the Liberals until the end of Trudeau’s term in 2025.
